What is Average revenue per user (ARPU)?

Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) is a metric that measures the revenue a business generates per user or customer over a defined time period. ARPU is calculated by dividing total revenue by the total number of active users within that period. It is widely used in mobile apps, subscription services, and telecommunications to benchmark monetization performance and evaluate pricing strategies.

How it works

ARPU is computed using a straightforward formula:

ARPU = Total Revenue / Number of Users

For example, if an app generates $100,000 in a month with 10,000 active users, the ARPU is $10. The result represents the average revenue contribution of each user during that period.

Defining the Time Period

The time frame used significantly shapes the insight ARPU provides. Monthly ARPU is the most common interval for subscription apps and mobile games. Quarterly or annual ARPU is more useful for businesses with longer purchase cycles. ARPU offers a broader view of overall monetization health, while ARPDAU reveals day-to-day revenue fluctuations.

ARPU vs. LTV

Lifetime Value (LTV) predicts the total net revenue a user generates over their entire relationship with a product. ARPU, by contrast, measures revenue within a fixed, historical window. LTV is forward-looking and accounts for retention and churn, making it essential for evaluating long-term user acquisition investments. ARPU is backward-looking and provides an immediate snapshot of monetization efficiency. Both metrics complement each other: ARPU informs short-term pricing decisions, while LTV guides user acquisition spend.

Why it matters

ARPU is a core monetization health indicator for any user-facing product. A rising ARPU signals that users are spending more per period, which can reflect successful upselling, improved pricing, or stronger product engagement. A declining ARPU signals that users are spending less, which may indicate pricing pressure, increased free-tier usage, or a shift in the user mix toward lower-value segments.

ARPU also enables meaningful comparisons across user cohorts, acquisition channels, and product lines. Marketers can identify which channels deliver high-ARPU users versus channels that drive volume but low monetization. This distinction directly informs how budgets should be allocated across paid media campaigns.

For subscription businesses, ARPU interacts closely with churn rate. A high ARPU combined with low churn produces strong revenue retention. Conversely, high ARPU with high churn can mask an unstable revenue base. Tracking ARPU alongside retention rate and LTV gives product and growth teams a complete picture of monetization sustainability.

In mobile app contexts, ARPU differences between platforms, regions, or user segments help teams prioritize localization efforts, in-app purchase pricing tiers, and ad monetization strategies. How to use ARPU to optimize mobile app monetization

1. Set a consistent measurement window. Decide whether to track monthly, quarterly, or annual ARPU and apply it uniformly. Monthly ARPU is the standard starting point for most mobile apps.

2. Define your user base precisely. Use active users rather than total registered users for a more actionable signal. Align your ARPU denominator with the active user definition used elsewhere in your analytics stack, such as MAU or DAU.

3. Segment ARPU by acquisition channel. Break down ARPU by the channel that acquired each user cohort. This reveals which paid media channels, organic sources, or referral programs deliver the highest-value users, not just the most users.

4. Compare ARPU across user cohorts. Analyze ARPU for users acquired in different time periods or campaigns. Cohort-level ARPU trends show whether recent acquisition efforts are bringing in higher or lower value users compared to historical benchmarks.

5. Pair ARPU with retention rate and LTV. ARPU in isolation does not capture user longevity. Combine it with retention rate and LTV to understand whether high-ARPU users are also retained long enough to justify acquisition costs.

6. Monitor ARPU alongside churn. If ARPU rises but churn also rises, the user base may be shifting toward power users while losing casual spenders. Understanding this dynamic helps product teams make targeted engagement and pricing decisions.
