Install
What is Install?
An install is the event recorded when a user downloads a mobile app and opens it for the first time on their device. In mobile measurement, it serves as the foundational conversion event that marks the beginning of a user's relationship with an app. It is one of the most widely tracked metrics in mobile marketing, used to evaluate the effectiveness of user acquisition campaigns.
How it works
An install is registered when two conditions are met: the app is downloaded to a device, and the user opens it for the first time. Mobile measurement partners (MMPs) record this first open as the attributable install event and link it to the marketing touchpoint responsible for driving the user to the app store.
Install Attribution
When a user taps an ad, a tracking link captures the click and records relevant data such as device identifiers, timestamp, and campaign parameters. When the user later opens the app for the first time, the MMP matches this open to the recorded click using attribution logic. The install is then credited to the corresponding campaign, ad network, or channel based on the configured attribution model and lookback window.
Organic vs. Non-Organic Installs
Installs are classified into two types. Organic installs occur when users discover and download an app without being influenced by a paid advertisement, for example through an App Store search or word of mouth. Non-organic installs are driven by paid campaigns and are directly attributable to a specific ad touchpoint. Distinguishing between these two types is essential for calculating true return on ad spend.
Install Tracking Signals
MMPs use a combination of signals to accurately record and attribute installs. These include device identifiers such as IDFA on iOS and GAID on Android, install referrer data on Android, probabilistic modeling for privacy-constrained environments, and SKAdNetwork postbacks for iOS campaigns operating under App Tracking Transparency.
Why it matters
The install metric is the primary indicator of user acquisition success and directly informs decisions about ad budget allocation. A high install volume signals that creative, targeting, and channel selection are working together effectively. A low install count despite high impressions or clicks points to friction in the conversion funnel, whether in ad relevance, store listing quality, or audience targeting.
Beyond raw volume, installs provide the baseline for calculating critical downstream metrics. Cost per install (CPI) determines how efficiently budget is being spent to acquire users. Install-to-retention ratios reveal whether acquired users are genuinely interested in the app or are low-quality traffic. Cohort analysis built on install dates allows marketers to track how different acquisition batches perform over time in terms of engagement, revenue, and churn.
Installs also serve as the entry point for lifecycle tracking. Every in-app event, purchase, and re-engagement action is measured relative to the original install, making accurate install attribution foundational to any downstream measurement. Without reliable install data, return on investment calculations, lifetime value projections, and campaign optimization all lose accuracy.
For advertisers using Airbridge, install data is unified across channels and enriched with post-install behavioral data, enabling a complete view from first open through long-term user value.
How to measure installs effectively
1. Integrate an MMP SDK
To measure installs accurately, integrate a mobile measurement partner SDK into your app. The SDK captures the first open event and sends it to the MMP server for attribution. This ensures installs are recorded in a standardized way across all platforms and campaigns.
2. Configure Attribution Windows
Set appropriate lookback windows for click-through and view-through attribution. A standard click lookback window is 7 to 30 days, while view-through windows are typically shorter. Matching these windows to your campaign type ensures installs are credited to the right touchpoints without over-attribution.
3. Distinguish Organic and Non-Organic Installs
Use your MMP dashboard to segment installs by source. Separate organic installs from paid ones to calculate true CPI and assess the incremental value of your campaigns. Monitor organic install trends alongside paid campaigns to detect any halo effects.
4. Set Up Install Fraud Detection
Activate fraud detection rules to filter out fake installs generated by click farms, device emulators, or SDK spoofing. Invalid installs inflate acquisition numbers and skew all downstream metrics. Use anomaly detection on click-to-install time (CTIT) and device-level signals to flag suspicious patterns.
5. Connect Installs to Post-Install Events
Link install data to in-app events such as registrations, purchases, and sessions. This allows you to evaluate not just install volume but install quality. Campaigns that drive high installs but low post-install engagement indicate a mismatch between ad targeting and app value proposition.
6. Use Install Data for Campaign Optimization
Analyze install performance by channel, creative, geography, and time of day. Reallocate budget toward sources that deliver installs with strong downstream performance. Use cohort comparisons to identify which acquisition channels produce the most retained and highest-value users over time.
