Organic install
What is Organic install?
An organic install is an app installation that occurs when a user discovers and downloads an app without being directed by a paid marketing campaign or incentivized promotion. The user journey leading to the install is not attributed to any specific paid media source, whether through app store browsing, keyword search, word-of-mouth, or direct referral. Even if a user previously encountered a paid ad but did not install within the attribution window, a subsequent install is classified as organic.
How it works
Organic installs are identified by the absence of a valid attribution signal connecting the install event to a paid touchpoint. Mobile measurement platforms (MMPs) determine whether an install is organic by checking whether it can be matched to a tracked click or impression within the defined attribution window.
Attribution Window and Organic Classification
When a user installs an app, the MMP checks recent click and impression data against that device. If no matching paid touchpoint is found within the lookback window, the install is recorded as organic. This means organic installs serve as the baseline against which non-organic install (NOI) performance is measured.
Discovery Channels for Organic Installs
Organic installs originate from several distinct discovery paths. App store search occurs when a user actively searches for an app using keywords and finds it through app store rankings. Web search brings users from search engine results pages to an app's listing. Word-of-mouth occurs when existing users recommend the app to others directly. Earned media coverage, such as press mentions or editorial features, also drives organic installs without any direct paid spend. Each channel reflects a different aspect of the app's organic visibility and brand strength.
Role of ASO and SEO
App Store Optimization (ASO) and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) are the primary levers for increasing organic install volume. ASO improves an app's discoverability within app store search results by optimizing the app title, description, keywords, screenshots, and ratings. SEO builds organic web traffic that funnels users toward the app's store listing. Both disciplines require sustained, long-term investment before producing measurable results, but the compounding effect of improved rankings delivers durable, cost-free install volume over time.
Why it matters
Organic installs are a core signal of sustainable app health. Users who install an app without paid influence have actively sought it out, which reflects genuine product-market fit. This self-selection produces users who demonstrate higher intent from the start.
Organic users consistently show stronger retention and lower churn compared to users acquired through paid channels. Because they discovered the app on their own terms, they are more likely to engage with core features and remain active over time.
From a cost perspective, organic installs carry no direct acquisition cost. As organic install share grows, the overall blended cost per install decreases, improving return on ad spend (ROAS) and return on investment (ROI) across the entire user base.
Organic install volume also functions as a measure of brand equity. A high and growing organic install rate signals that the app has established credibility, strong word-of-mouth, and effective discoverability. MMPs like Airbridge segment organic from non-organic installs in reporting, enabling marketers to track organic growth trends independently and evaluate the true incremental contribution of paid campaigns.
How to measure and grow organic installs
Establish Baseline Measurement
Begin by configuring an MMP to distinguish organic from non-organic installs accurately. Ensure all paid campaigns use properly tagged tracking links so installs driven by paid media are correctly attributed. Any install without a matching paid touchpoint is recorded as organic, giving you a clean baseline.
Monitor Organic Share Over Time
Track the ratio of organic installs to total installs as a recurring metric. A rising organic share alongside stable or growing total installs indicates that ASO, SEO, and word-of-mouth efforts are compounding effectively. Declining organic share may signal over-reliance on paid acquisition or weakening discoverability.
Optimize App Store Presence
Invest in ASO by conducting keyword research to identify terms with high search volume and relevance to your app's core value. Update the app title, subtitle, and description to incorporate these keywords naturally. Regularly refresh screenshots and preview videos to reflect current features. Maintain a high average rating by actively responding to user reviews and resolving issues quickly.
Build Supporting SEO and Content
Create web content that targets search queries relevant to your app's use case. This includes landing pages, blog articles, and how-to guides that rank on search engines and link users toward your app store listing. Backlinks from credible publications and earned media coverage amplify this effect.
Leverage Word-of-Mouth and Referrals
Design in-app experiences that encourage sharing. Features such as referral programs, social sharing prompts, and community elements accelerate organic discovery through existing users. The K-factor metric quantifies how effectively your current user base generates new organic installs.
Measure Cohort Quality
Compare retention, lifetime value (LTV), and in-app event rates between organic and non-organic cohorts. This comparison validates the quality premium of organic users and informs budget decisions about how much to invest in ASO and SEO versus paid acquisition channels.
