Best Re-engagement Attribution for Productivity App

On this page
For a productivity app, look for a tool that credits the ad, email, or push link that brought a lapsed user back, and that opens the exact screen they left. Check how it bills, because productivity apps send a lot of events from users who open them every day. Airbridge is one of the six vendors below, so read this with that in mind.
What productivity apps need from re-engagement
A lapsed productivity user is unusual. Their notes, tasks, and files are still inside your app. That stored work is a strong reason to return, and a game or a news app rarely has it. It also makes the first screen matter. A link that says "your project is waiting" and then lands on a generic home screen wastes the moment.
Usage has a work rhythm. Activity tends to run on weekdays, dip at weekends, and drop over long holidays. Then it comes back on its own. A user who goes quiet for two weeks in December may not be lapsed at all, and a win-back ad would only claim credit for a return that was going to happen. Back-to-school and new-job moments work the other way. They bring real reasons to set up a new system.
Three more traits shape what you should measure:
- Different lapsed users need different offers. A free user who never upgraded, an expired trial, and a cancelled subscriber are not the same audience.
- Mobile may be only part of the product. Many productivity tools also live on desktop or the web. Someone who looks inactive on mobile may be busy at their laptop. Paying to re-engage them wastes money.
- Buyers and users can differ. A team lead may pay while others use the app, so a user's return does not always equal revenue.
So engagement" class="glossary-link" title="Re-engagement">re-engagement here is less about reach and more about telling real lapses from quiet weeks. Sign In, Open, Start Trial, Subscribe, and Unsubscribe are the events that show it.
What the data shows

Of about 2,100 apps in the Productivity category, with $10K+ estimated monthly revenue and in-app purchases (AppKittie, November 2026), 354 show Apple Ads (16.9%, against a 15-category average of 15.2%) and 172 show Meta ads (8.2%, against 15.5%). These are acquisition signals, so they say nothing about re-engagement. The revenue chart shows estimates from a small sample of 40 apps, and ChatGPT ($175M), Google One ($97M), and Gmail ($27M) are not peers for a small team, so do not read their scale as a benchmark.
How to choose
| What to check | Why it matters for a productivity app |
|---|---|
| Non-ad sources | Your cheapest win-back channels are email and push. They need tracking too. |
| Deep link depth | The link should open the document or task, not just the app. |
| Window control | You decide how long a return can credit a message. Too long and you claim natural returns. |
| Audience sync | Sending an audience to ad channels by hand gets old quickly. |
| Billing on high-frequency use | Daily opens add events. Compare event billing and conversion billing on your own numbers. |
| Holdouts you can run yourself | A tool shows who returned. Only a held-back group shows who returned because of you. |

With daily opens in mind, here is how they compare:
- AppsFlyer may suit an app with many daily opens but few conversions, since Growth bills $0.07 per conversion. Check what counts as a conversion.
- Singular may suit a similar app at $0.05 per conversion on Growth, after a free plan. Ask the same question.
- Kochava may suit a team that wants to choose conversions or MAU as the billing basis, by plan.
- Branch may suit a team that can ask directly, because its billing model is not stated on its pricing page.
- Adjust may suit a team that will check the vendor page, since billing is not shown here.
- Airbridge Core may suit an app whose monthly events stay near the 500K data points included at $40+/mo.

How to set this up in Airbridge
- Try it first: sign up, then add the SDK, about 5 minutes for a basic install. See how to set up attribution without a sales call.
- Send standard events: Open, Sign In, Start Trial, Subscribe, and Unsubscribe. Connect your subscription tool so plan changes arrive as events. Read connecting RevenueCat revenue to ads if you use it.
- Create tracking links with deep links for each win-back message. Use them in email, push, and in-app messages. A custom domain and branded short links are on Core. Clicks and impressions on those links do not count as data points.
- Use Audience Manager with auto-sync to send an audience to Meta Ads, Google Ads, Apple Ads, or TikTok for Business.
- Set your lookback window, then read results with retargeting and re-engagement attribution. Use the Retention report with Subscribe as the Return Event to see who kept paying.
What Airbridge Core does not do here
- No uninstall tracking. Core cannot tell you who uninstalled, so you cannot split dormant users from gone users. That is on Growth.
- Deferred deep links last 1 hour. A user who reinstalls more than 1 hour after the click will not land on the deep linked screen. Plan your message for an app that is still installed.
- No view of web or desktop use. The Core Web SDK is for web-to-app tracking only, and PC attribution is on Growth. If your product is mainly desktop, Core sees only part of the picture.
- Win-back ads stay on four channels. Core covers Meta, Google, Apple, and TikTok. If you run win-back ads on other networks, you need Growth or another vendor.
FAQ
What is the difference between retargeting and reactivation?
In general, retargeting means showing ads to people who already have your app. Reactivation means bringing back people who stopped using it. Core includes retargeting and re-engagement attribution. Reactivation is not self-serve: the help center says it needs activation through a CSM, and Core has no dedicated CSM. Vendors define these terms in different ways, so check the definitions before you compare numbers between tools.
Should a small team pay for re-engagement attribution at all?
Only when you spend on it. If your win-back is one email a month, your email tool may be enough. A tracking tool starts to pay off when you run paid win-back ads, because that budget needs proof. Test it against a holdout group first, since the tool cannot show what would have happened anyway.
Will every app open cost me money?
Each open is one data point, so it counts. Core includes 500K data points a month, then charges $0.0001 for each extra one. There is no spending cap, so check your event volume during the trial, when no usage limit applies. A 30-day free trial is the simplest way to see your real number.
