What is Attribution Window?

Attribution Window is a predefined period during which a user's in-app actions, following a target event such as an app install or deep link open, can be credited to a specific winning touchpoint. It defines how long after an initial conversion a marketer can still associate downstream user behavior with the original ad interaction. In Airbridge's framework, Attribution Window applies specifically to in-app events that occur after installation, distinguishing it from the Lookback Window, which governs the period before and up to the install itself.

How it works

The Attribution Window activates after a target event is recorded and remains open for a configured duration. Any qualifying in-app events that occur within that window are credited to the same winning touchpoint that drove the original target event.

Target Events vs. Subsequent Events

Two event types determine how attribution is applied within the window.

Target Events are the primary conversion triggers. In Airbridge, these include App Installs, Deep Link Opens, and Deep Link Pageviews. They mark the start of the Attribution Window.

Subsequent Events are the business-outcome actions that occur after a Target Event, such as sign-ups, purchases, or add-to-cart actions. These are not Target Events themselves. Instead, they are credited to the winning touchpoint of the Target Event if they happen within the open Attribution Window. This means a single touchpoint earns credit not only for the install but also for the downstream engagement it generated.

Window Duration and Configuration

Attribution Windows are configurable by the advertiser or MMP platform. The window length can differ depending on the type of event being tracked and the business model. A shorter window reduces the risk of over-attribution to older touchpoints, while a longer window captures delayed user behavior that still reflects ad influence. Platforms like Airbridge allow marketers to customize these durations per campaign or event type, giving teams precise control over how credit is assigned across the user journey.

Why it matters

Attribution Windows provide the analytical bridge between an ad interaction and the full spectrum of user behavior it influences. Without a defined window, marketers would only see whether a user installed an app, not whether that install translated into meaningful engagement or revenue. By capturing Subsequent Events within the window, teams can measure the true downstream value of each touchpoint, not just the immediate conversion. This enables more accurate return on ad spend calculations, better budget allocation across channels, and a clearer picture of which campaigns drive high-value users rather than just volume. For retargeting and re-engagement campaigns, the Attribution Window is equally critical, as it determines whether actions taken by returning users are correctly linked to the campaign that reactivated them.

How to set up an Attribution Window

Setting up an Attribution Window effectively requires aligning the window duration with your product's typical user engagement timeline.

  1. Identify your Target Events. Determine which events, such as app installs or deep link opens, will serve as the starting point for your Attribution Window. These are the events that trigger the window to open.

  2. Map your Subsequent Events. List the in-app actions you want to attribute back to the winning touchpoint, such as registrations, purchases, or subscription starts. These are the outcomes you want to credit to the originating ad.

  3. Choose an appropriate window length. Analyze your product's typical time-to-action data. If most users who convert to paying customers do so within three days of install, a three-to-seven day window is appropriate. If your product has a longer consideration cycle, extend accordingly.

  4. Configure the window in your MMP. In Airbridge, Attribution Windows are set at the campaign or event level within the dashboard. Navigate to the attribution settings and define the window duration for each event category separately, since different event types may warrant different durations.

  5. Monitor and adjust. Review attribution reports regularly to check whether Subsequent Events are being captured within the window or falling outside it. If high-value events consistently occur just outside the window, consider extending it. If unrelated events are being credited to old touchpoints, consider shortening it.

  6. Align with ad network settings. Attribution Window settings in your MMP should be synchronized with the windows configured on partner ad networks to avoid discrepancies in reporting between platforms.
