In-app events
What is In-app events?
In-app events are measurable user actions and interactions that occur within a mobile application. They capture behaviors ranging from simple actions like opening the app or viewing a screen, to high-value conversions like completing a purchase, finishing a level, or subscribing to a service. In-app events form the foundation of mobile analytics, enabling marketers and product teams to understand how users engage with an app throughout their lifecycle.
How it works
In-app events are tracked by integrating an analytics SDK or mobile measurement partner (MMP) SDK into the app. When a user performs a defined action, the SDK captures the event and sends the associated data, including event name, timestamp, user identifiers, and any custom parameters, to the measurement platform.
Event Types
In-app events generally fall into several categories. Standard events are predefined actions recognized across platforms, such as app opens, registrations, purchases, and level completions. Custom events are developer-defined actions specific to an app's unique features, such as saving a playlist or completing a profile. Revenue events capture transactional data, including purchase amounts, currency, and item details, and are critical for calculating metrics like lifetime value (LTV) and return on ad spend (ROAS).
Event Parameters
Each event carries parameters that add context to the raw action. A purchase event, for example, may include the item name, quantity, price, and payment method. These parameters allow teams to segment and analyze events at a granular level, enabling deeper insights into user behavior patterns.
Attribution and Postbacks
When an MMP tracks in-app events, it links each event back to the marketing touchpoint that drove the install or re-engagement. This attribution data is then sent via postbacks to ad networks and partners, allowing them to optimize campaigns based on downstream user actions rather than installs alone.
Why it matters
In-app events are the primary signal used to evaluate whether marketing investment is generating real business value. Tracking only installs tells marketers little about whether acquired users actually engage, convert, or retain. In-app events close this gap by revealing what users do after installing the app.
For campaign optimization, in-app events allow ad networks and automated bidding systems to optimize toward actions that matter to the business, such as purchases or subscriptions, rather than surface-level metrics like clicks or installs. This shifts spend toward audiences more likely to generate revenue.
For product teams, in-app event data surfaces friction points in user flows, highlights features that drive strong engagement, and informs prioritization decisions. Retention and churn analysis both depend on consistent in-app event tracking to identify when and why users disengage.
For personalization and retargeting, in-app event history enables marketers to segment users by behavior and serve relevant messaging. A user who abandoned a cart receives different messaging than one who completed three purchases, and both are treated differently from a dormant user who has not opened the app in weeks.
Airbridge captures in-app events and connects them to attribution data, allowing teams to trace revenue and engagement outcomes back to specific campaigns, channels, and creatives.
How to track in-app events effectively
Define a measurement plan before implementation
Before writing any tracking code, establish which events matter most to the business. Map out the user journey and identify the key milestones: registration, onboarding completion, first purchase, repeat purchase, subscription activation, and any app-specific actions that indicate strong engagement. Prioritize events that directly tie to business outcomes.
Implement event tracking with an MMP SDK
Integrate the MMP SDK into the app and use the SDK's event logging methods to fire events at the appropriate moments in the user flow. Use standard event names where available to ensure compatibility with ad network optimization algorithms. Add relevant parameters to each event to capture context, such as product IDs, revenue values, and content categories.
Validate events before going live
Use the MMP's debugging tools or a dedicated testing environment to confirm that events fire correctly, carry the right parameters, and are attributed to the correct source. Incorrect event naming or missing parameters undermine campaign optimization and reporting accuracy.
Map events to campaign goals
Work with ad network partners to align in-app events with campaign optimization targets. Most major networks support optimization toward post-install events. Selecting the right optimization event, one that occurs frequently enough to generate learning signal but is meaningful enough to reflect business value, is critical to campaign performance.
Monitor event quality continuously
Track event volume, conversion rates between funnel steps, and anomalies that could indicate tracking gaps or data integrity issues. A sudden drop in purchase events, for example, may indicate a broken checkout flow or a tracking implementation issue rather than a real decline in user behavior.
Use event data for segmentation and retargeting
Sync in-app event data with retargeting partners and CRM systems to build behavioral audiences. Users who completed specific events can be targeted with relevant follow-up messaging, while users who dropped off at key funnel steps can be re-engaged with personalized campaigns.
