Privacy-first attribution: what you can still measure

Some of the most thoughtful apps we talk to are built privacy-first. A period tracker that states plainly: "The app has no third-party ad or analytics SDKs." A wellness app that counts a few anonymous events on its own server with no device ID. A plant-care app whose founder didn't want "to add a general tracker just to count two moments."

These founders still need to know which channels bring users who stay and pay. The good news: you can learn a lot without user-level tracking.

At a glance

  • Combine three kinds of signals:

    • Privacy-preserving tools built into the platforms: Apple's AdAttributionKit and SKAdNetwork, Apple Ads attribution, App Store Connect campaign links, Google Play acquisition reports and the Play install-referrer" class="glossary-link" title="Install referrer">Install Referrer.

    • First-party signals you control: a few anonymous server counters and an optional onboarding question.

    • Aggregate lift around campaigns.

  • You'll get answers by channel and campaign, not by person, and that's enough to decide where to spend.

What the platforms give you, privately

Tool What it tells you Tracking prompt needed?
AdAttributionKit and SKAdNetwork (iOS) Aggregated ad conversions with conversion values you define No, Apple says apps don't need ATT to use these APIs
Apple Ads attribution (iOS) Whether an install came from an Apple Ads campaign, ad group and keyword Works through an attribution token from the AdServices framework
App Store Connect campaign links Downloads and sales by campaign link No, reported in aggregate
Google Play acquisition reports Store visitors and installers by source, including UTM-tagged links No, reported in aggregate
Play Install Referrer (Android) The referrer of the store link that led to an install No user tracking prompt; read by your own app

These tools were built for exactly this situation: measuring marketing while keeping individuals private.

First-party signals you control

  • A handful of anonymous counters. Count installs, onboarding completions and trial starts on your own server, with no device ID and no personal data. Daily totals are enough for lift analysis.

  • An optional onboarding question. "Where did you hear about us?" collects a source the user chooses to share. Store only the answer, not who gave it, if you prefer.

  • Your subscription platform's totals. Daily trial starts and conversions, which you already have.

Read campaigns through aggregate lift

Without user-level data, you measure channels the way analysts measured TV for decades: by lift. Compare trial starts during a campaign with your baseline, run campaigns in some countries and not others, or pause a channel for a week and watch the change. We explain the basics in our post on measuring creator posts without an MMP.

Special case: kids' apps

Apps in the App Store Kids Category have stricter rules on third-party analytics and advertising. Check Apple's App Review Guidelines and Google Play's Families policies before adding any SDK, and lean on aggregate, platform-provided reports.

If you add a measurement partner later

Some privacy-first teams eventually choose a measurement partner. If you do, look for:

  • Support for privacy-preserving frameworks such as AdAttributionKit and SKAdNetwork.

  • Control over exactly which events are collected.

  • A data processing agreement and clear data retention settings.

  • No sharing of sensitive in-app content, such as health entries or journal text.

Update your privacy policy and store privacy labels to match whatever you add.

Privacy-first attribution FAQ

Can I measure app marketing without third-party SDKs?

Yes, in aggregate. Use AdAttributionKit or SKAdNetwork, Apple Ads attribution, App Store Connect campaign links, Google Play acquisition reports, the Play Install Referrer, your own anonymous counters and an optional onboarding question.

Do I need the ATT prompt for iOS ad attribution?

Not for Apple's privacy-preserving frameworks. Apple's documentation says apps don't need App Tracking Transparency to use its ad attribution APIs.

What can't I measure without user-level tracking?

Individual journeys across apps and websites. You can still measure channels and campaigns in aggregate, which is usually enough for budget decisions.

Is an onboarding survey privacy-friendly?

It can be. Make it optional, ask only where people heard about you, and store the answer without linking it to sensitive data.

What should kids' apps do?

Follow Apple's Kids Category rules and Google Play's Families policies, avoid third-party analytics and ads that aren't allowed, and rely on aggregate store reports and lift.

Growth you can measure, without tracking people

Privacy-first doesn't mean flying blind. Use the private-by-design tools Apple and Google provide, a few first-party signals you control, and aggregate lift, and you'll know which channels deserve your budget without tracking anyone.

If you later decide to add a measurement partner, Airbridge supports SKAdNetwork measurement and lets you choose exactly which events to collect. The Core Plan is built for subscription apps, and you can try it free for 30 days, then from $40 per month.
