What is Walled garden?
A walled garden is a closed digital ecosystem in which a single company controls the ad inventory, user data, and overall advertising environment. Advertisers operating within a walled garden can only target users, access data, and measure performance using tools provided by that same platform. Major examples include large social media networks and search engines that restrict third-party data access and external measurement.
How it works
Walled gardens operate by centralizing three core elements within a single platform: user data, ad inventory, and measurement infrastructure. Advertisers must use the platform's own tools to plan, execute, and report on campaigns, with no ability to export raw data or integrate external attribution systems freely.
Data Control
The platform collects and retains all user behavioral data. Advertisers can leverage this data for targeting, but they cannot extract it or combine it with data from other platforms. This creates a data asymmetry where the platform holds significantly more insight than the advertiser.
Inventory Control
Ad placements are sold exclusively through the platform's own systems. Advertisers cannot purchase walled garden inventory through external demand-side platforms or open programmatic channels, limiting how campaigns are assembled across publishers.
Measurement Control
Performance reporting is produced by the platform itself, meaning the platform is both the seller of the inventory and the measurer of its own effectiveness. This self-reported model creates challenges for independent verification. Second, budget efficiency is harder to optimize independently. Because walled gardens control their own reporting, advertisers cannot always apply consistent attribution models across all channels. Their first-party data is typically high quality and based on authenticated user identities, reducing the prevalence of invalid traffic and fraudulent impressions. Campaign measurement within a single platform is also internally consistent, even if it cannot be easily compared across platforms.
How to prepare for walled garden measurement challenges
Advertisers working across walled gardens and open networks need a deliberate measurement strategy to avoid fragmented or misleading performance data.
Implement an MMP as a neutral measurement layer. A mobile measurement partner receives postback signals from walled gardens alongside data from open programmatic channels. This provides a single source of truth that is not controlled by any individual platform.
