What is Mobile measurement partner (MMP)?

A mobile measurement partner (MMP) is a third-party attribution provider that collects, attributes, and organizes mobile app data to deliver a unified overview of campaign performance across multiple marketing channels. Because an MMP is independent of the ad networks it measures, it can apply one consistent attribution logic across every channel — something no individual ad platform can do for the others. Mobile marketers use MMPs to track user acquisition, engagement, and conversion events, and to decide which campaigns actually deserve credit for installs and revenue.

Well-known MMPs include Airbridge, AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, Singular, Kochava, and Tenjin.

How it works

MMPs operate through a systematic data collection and attribution process that begins with SDK implementation. When an MMP SDK is integrated into a mobile app, it starts collecting user interaction data across devices and channels, tracking campaign engagements like ad clicks and impressions alongside app installs and in-app events such as purchases or registrations.

Data Collection Process

The MMP's SDK continuously monitors user touchpoints across the customer journey, capturing device identifiers, timestamps, and interaction data from integrated advertising channels. This data flows into the MMP's attribution engine, which uses deterministic and probabilistic matching methods to connect marketing touchpoints with conversion events.

Attribution Logic

The MMP applies its attribution model to determine which campaigns and channels contributed to specific user actions. This involves analyzing attribution windows, applying last-touch or multi-touch attribution rules, and accounting for factors like view-through attribution to provide accurate campaign performance insights.

Unified Reporting

All attributed data is consolidated into a single dashboard that presents campaign performance metrics across all integrated channels, enabling marketers to compare channel effectiveness and optimize their marketing mix based on comprehensive, unbiased data.

Why it matters

MMPs are essential for mobile marketers managing multi-channel campaigns because they solve the critical challenge of fragmented data and measurement inconsistencies. Without an MMP, marketers must manually collect and reconcile data from dozens of advertising channels, leading to incomplete attribution and suboptimal budget allocation decisions. MMPs enable data-driven decision making by providing unbiased performance metrics that help identify the most valuable acquisition channels and optimize return on ad spend. For mobile apps of any size, MMPs also help maintain data privacy compliance while delivering actionable insights across complex attribution scenarios.

MMP vs. ad network dashboards and product analytics

An MMP answers a different question than the other measurement tools a mobile team typically runs.

Ad network dashboards (Meta Ads Manager, Google Ads, TikTok Ads Manager) each report the conversions their own ads drove — using their own attribution rules, and without visibility into the other networks a user may have touched. Because every network claims credit independently, adding their reported conversions together routinely produces a total larger than the app's actual installs. An MMP receives the claims from all networks and deduplicates them under a single attribution logic, so one install is credited once.

Product analytics tools (such as Google Analytics, Firebase, Amplitude, or Mixpanel) excel at measuring what users do inside the app — funnels, retention, feature usage. They are not integrated with ad networks as attribution authorities, so they cannot reliably tell you which paid campaign, ad set, or creative acquired each user. Most teams run both: an MMP for acquisition attribution, product analytics for in-app behavior.

Self-attributing networks (SRNs) — Meta, Google, TikTok, and Apple Search Ads — do not expose user-level attribution data directly to advertisers. They integrate with MMPs as authorized measurement partners, which is why granular, cross-checked campaign measurement on these channels generally runs through an MMP.

MMPs in the privacy era

Privacy changes have made MMPs more, not less, important. On iOS, Apple's App Tracking Transparency (ATT) framework limits device-level identifiers, and SKAdNetwork (and its successor AdAttributionKit) delivers campaign results through Apple's own privacy-preserving postbacks. Interpreting SKAdNetwork data — conversion value schemas, postback windows, crowd anonymity tiers — is complex, and MMPs handle that modeling so marketers can read iOS campaign results alongside other channels. Similar privacy-preserving measurement frameworks continue to evolve on Android. An MMP's role in this environment is to combine consented device-level data, aggregated privacy-framework data, and modeled estimates into one coherent reporting view.

How to choose an MMP

Evaluation criteria differ by team, but these dimensions separate the options fastest:

  • Channel coverage: Confirm native integrations exist for every network you buy from — including regional channels your market requires.
  • Revenue-event depth: If your app monetizes through subscriptions, check whether trials, renewals, and refunds from billing platforms (RevenueCat, Adapty, Superwall, or your own server) can be attributed to campaigns, not just installs.
  • Pricing model: MMPs price on different units — monthly events or data points, attributed conversions, or ad spend. Model your cost at current volume and at 3× volume before committing.
  • Data ownership and export: Verify you can export raw, user-level (where permitted) and aggregated data to your own warehouse.
  • Fraud protection: Ask how click spam, click injection, and install farms are detected and rejected.
  • Contract terms: Note minimum commitments, renewal terms, and which capabilities are add-ons versus included.

How to Set Up a Mobile Measurement Partner

Setting up an MMP involves a strategic implementation process that begins with selecting the right provider based on your attribution needs, supported channels, and technical requirements.

Once you've chosen an MMP, implement their SDK into your mobile app following their technical documentation. This typically involves adding SDK libraries to your app code, configuring tracking parameters, and setting up postback URLs for data sharing with advertising partners.

Next, establish integrations with your advertising channels by providing them with your MMP's click and impression URLs. Configure attribution windows and conversion events based on your business model, ensuring you track the metrics that matter most for your user acquisition goals.

Finally, set up unified dashboards and automated reporting to monitor campaign performance across all channels. Most MMPs, including Airbridge, provide onboarding support and technical documentation to streamline this setup process and ensure accurate data collection from day one.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an MMP if I already use Google Analytics or Firebase?

They solve different problems. Product analytics tools measure in-app behavior but are not integrated with ad networks as attribution authorities, so they cannot deduplicate conversion claims across paid channels. If you spend meaningfully on more than one ad network, an MMP is what reconciles those claims into one truth.

Why can't I just trust each ad network's own numbers?

Each network reports the conversions it believes its ads drove, under its own rules, with no knowledge of other networks' touchpoints. Summed across networks, reported conversions typically exceed real installs. An MMP applies one attribution logic across all channels so budget decisions rest on deduplicated data.

How much does an MMP cost?

Pricing models vary widely: free allowances, per-conversion pricing, data-point-based pricing, or percentage of ad spend. As one reference point, Airbridge Core is self-serve at $40+/mo after a 30-day free trial, with 500K data points included and no annual contract. Always model your own event volume against each vendor's billing unit.

When should an app add an MMP?

The common trigger is running paid user acquisition on two or more channels — that is the point where cross-network deduplication and unified ROAS reporting start changing budget decisions. Teams also adopt MMPs when preparing iOS campaigns that require SKAdNetwork conversion modeling.
