What is Remarketing?

Remarketing is the practice of re-engaging users who have previously interacted with a brand, app, or product through targeted advertising, personalized messaging, or promotional content. It leverages recorded user behavior, such as ad views, cart additions, purchases, or app sessions, to deliver relevant communications that encourage further action. Remarketing focuses on existing or lapsed users rather than new audiences, making it a cost-efficient strategy for sustaining engagement and driving conversions.

How it works

Remarketing works by collecting behavioral data from user interactions across touchpoints, then using that data to serve personalized ads or messages to specific audience segments. A mobile measurement partner (MMP) records in-app events and session data, enabling marketers to define audience cohorts based on user behavior and pass those segments to ad networks for targeted delivery.

Audience Segmentation

Marketers define audience groups based on specific behaviors: users who viewed a product but did not purchase, users who added items to a cart and abandoned it, users who have been inactive beyond a defined time threshold, or users who uninstalled the app. Each segment receives tailored creative and messaging designed to address their specific point of drop-off.

Deep Linking in Remarketing

Deep links embedded in remarketing ads send users directly to a relevant in-app destination rather than a generic home screen or app store page. This removes friction and increases the likelihood of completing a desired action. Deferred deep links extend this capability to users who do not yet have the app installed: once the user installs the app, the deferred deep link restores their prior context and routes them to the intended in-app page.

Ad Frequency Management

Serving the same ad repeatedly to the same user creates negative brand associations and diminishes campaign effectiveness. Frequency caps limit how often a specific user sees a given ad within a defined period. Effective remarketing strategies pair frequency controls with creative rotation to maintain relevance without causing fatigue.

Marketing Automation Integration

Email and push notification automation tools complement paid remarketing ads by triggering personalized messages based on real-time or time-delayed user behavior signals. When a user abandons a cart or reaches a dormant state, automated workflows dispatch the appropriate message at the optimal moment without manual intervention. Analytics platforms and MMPs provide the behavioral data that feeds these automation triggers.

Why it matters

Remarketing delivers measurable efficiency advantages because it targets users who have already demonstrated intent or familiarity with a product. Acquiring a new user requires building awareness, interest, and trust from scratch, while a remarketed user has already completed at least one step in that journey. This translates into meaningfully higher conversion rates and lower cost per action compared to pure user acquisition campaigns.

For mobile apps, where churn is a persistent challenge, remarketing is a primary tool for recovering dormant users and extending lifetime value. Re-engaging a lapsed user who understands the app's core value is significantly more efficient than replacing them through paid install campaigns. Dynamic product ads (DPAs) deepen this advantage by serving creatives populated with items or content the individual user has already shown interest in, increasing relevance at scale.

Remarketing also supports revenue optimization across the full user lifecycle. Win-back campaigns targeting users approaching uninstall thresholds, upsell campaigns targeting active purchasers, and loyalty campaigns targeting high-value users each serve distinct business objectives within a unified remarketing framework. MMPs like Airbridge provide the attribution and audience data infrastructure that makes cross-channel remarketing measurement accurate and actionable.

How to implement a remarketing strategy for mobile apps

  1. Define audience segments. Use your MMP and analytics platform to identify meaningful behavioral cohorts: cart abandoners, dormant users exceeding a set inactivity window, users who completed a first purchase but never returned, and high-value users eligible for upsell. Precision in segmentation directly determines campaign relevance.

  2. Set up event tracking. Ensure all relevant in-app events are instrumented and flowing to your MMP. Events such as product views, add-to-cart, checkout initiated, purchase completed, and session start are the foundational signals for audience construction. Without complete event data, segmentation is unreliable.

  3. Configure deep links for each campaign. Every remarketing ad should include a deep link that routes users to the exact in-app destination relevant to their prior behavior. Use deferred deep links for lapsed users who may have uninstalled the app to ensure a seamless re-entry experience after reinstallation.

  4. Apply frequency caps. Set impression limits per user per day and per campaign flight to prevent overexposure. Pair caps with creative rotation so users who see multiple impressions encounter varied messaging rather than repetition.

  5. Integrate marketing automation. Connect behavioral triggers from your MMP or analytics platform to your email and push notification tools. Define time-based and event-based rules, such as sending a cart recovery push notification 24 hours after abandonment or a win-back email after 30 days of inactivity.

  6. Measure incrementality. Use holdout groups to measure the true lift generated by remarketing campaigns versus organic re-engagement. Attribution alone does not confirm causality. Incrementality testing separates users who would have returned regardless from those who returned because of the ad.

  7. Iterate on creative and timing. Analyze conversion rates by segment, creative variant, and delivery timing. Use A/B testing to validate which messages and formats drive the strongest re-engagement, then apply learnings to future campaign planning.
