What is Re-engagement?

Re-engagement is the practice of reconnecting with mobile app users who have become inactive, stopped opening the app, or have not completed key in-app actions within a defined period. It encompasses campaigns, messaging, and ad strategies designed to bring lapsed users back into the app experience. The goal is to restore active usage, reduce churn, and increase each user's long-term value to the app.

How it works

Re-engagement operates by identifying users who have crossed a threshold of inactivity, then delivering targeted communications or ads to prompt them to return. Marketers define what constitutes a 'dormant' or 'lapsed' user based on time since last session, incomplete purchase flows, or missing milestone actions.

Identifying Lapsed Users

Mobile measurement platforms track session data and in-app events to flag users who have not opened the app within a configured time window. Segments are built around behaviors such as users who abandoned a cart, completed onboarding but never made a purchase, or once churned after a subscription lapse.

Re-engagement Channels

Once segments are defined, marketers reach lapsed users through multiple channels. Push notifications deliver personalized, timely reminders directly to the device. In-app messages target users who do open the app but remain underengaged. Retargeting ads serve paid creative to lapsed users across ad networks and exchanges using device identifiers or matched audience lists. Email and SMS channels supplement these touchpoints for apps with registered user bases.

Attribution of Re-engagement

MMPs like Airbridge attribute re-engagement conversions separately from new installs, allowing marketers to measure which channel or campaign successfully reactivated a user. Re-engagement attribution typically uses a lookback window tied to the click or impression that preceded the app open, ensuring accurate credit assignment across campaigns.

Why it matters

Acquiring a new user costs meaningfully more than reactivating an existing one who already has the app installed and some familiarity with the product. Re-engagement campaigns target users with demonstrated prior intent, which typically yields stronger conversion rates than cold acquisition. Reducing churn through re-engagement directly improves retention rate, a core health metric for any app. Higher retention compresses payback periods on acquisition spend and raises lifetime value, which in turn supports higher bids in paid user acquisition. For subscription and commerce apps, recovering even a fraction of lapsed users each month can produce a significant cumulative revenue impact over time. Re-engagement data also reveals where the user experience breaks down, surfacing which stages lose users most frequently and informing product improvements.

How to implement a re-engagement strategy for mobile apps

  1. Define inactivity thresholds. Set a clear rule for what makes a user 'lapsed', such as no session in 7, 14, or 30 days, or failure to complete a key action like a first purchase. Different thresholds suit different app categories and usage frequencies.

  2. Build targeted segments. Use your MMP or analytics platform to segment lapsed users by behavior, such as users who churned after onboarding, cart abandoners, or subscribers who did not renew. Precise segments allow personalized messaging rather than generic blasts.

  3. Select the right channels. Push notifications work well for users who have granted permission and are on a device where the app is installed. Retargeting ads through programmatic networks reach users even if push permissions were denied. Combine channels for higher reach without excessive frequency.

  4. Personalize the message. Reference the user's last action, a product they viewed, or a feature they never tried. Generic 'We miss you' messages underperform compared to content that reflects actual in-app behavior.

  5. Offer a concrete reason to return. Incentives such as limited-time discounts, loyalty rewards, or new content announcements give lapsed users a specific motivation to re-open the app beyond a reminder.

  6. Set up re-engagement attribution. Configure your MMP to track re-engagement events separately from installs. This ensures that reactivated sessions are attributed to the correct campaign and that you can calculate cost per re-engaged user accurately.

  7. Measure and iterate. Track re-engagement rate, cost per reactivation, and post-reactivation retention to assess campaign quality. Users who return once and churn again quickly signal a product or messaging problem rather than a targeting one. Use cohort analysis to compare the downstream value of reactivated users against newly acquired users.
