What is Instant apps?

Instant apps are a Google Play feature that allows Android users to launch and use portions of an app without installing it. Introduced by Android in 2017 and managed through the Google Play Instant program, instant apps deliver a lightweight, native app experience directly from a link, search result, or QR code. Any Android developer can build and publish an instant version of their app alongside the full installable version on the Google Play Store.

How it works

Instant apps run through Google Play Instant, which manages the delivery and execution of instant app modules on a user's device. Developers build a separate, streamlined module using the Google Play Instant SDK, packaging only the core functionality needed to demonstrate the app's value.

Building the instant module

Developers install the Google Play Instant SDK and designate specific features or screens as the instant experience. This module must stay within Google's defined size limits and cannot access all device permissions available to fully installed apps. The result is a focused, fast-loading entry point into the app's core functionality.

Discovery and access

Users discover instant apps in several ways. Inside the Google Play Store, a dedicated "Apps to Try Now" section surfaces instant-enabled apps. On individual app listing pages, instant-enabled apps display a "Try Now" button alongside the standard "Install" button. Clicking "Try Now" launches the app immediately without triggering a full download or installation.

Instant apps are also accessible from outside the Play Store. Developers can attach deep links to paid search results, social media posts, SMS messages, and QR codes. When a user taps one of these links, the relevant instant app module loads directly, bypassing the need to visit the Play Store first.

Transition to full install

Within the instant app experience, developers typically include a prompt encouraging users to install the full version. This converts engaged users into permanent installs at the point when interest is highest.

Why it matters

Instant apps reduce the friction that causes users to abandon the app discovery process. The traditional install funnel requires users to find an app, read its listing, decide to install, wait for the download, and only then experience the product. Instant apps collapse this process by delivering the experience immediately, which meaningfully improves conversion from awareness to engagement.

For marketers running paid campaigns, instant apps create a more effective post-click destination. A user clicking an ad for a game or shopping app can begin playing or browsing within seconds, rather than being asked to commit to a full installation upfront. This lowers the barrier to first engagement and gives the app a chance to demonstrate value before asking for the install.

For attribution and measurement, instant app sessions generate trackable events just as standard app sessions do. Mobile measurement partners can capture in-app events from instant sessions, allowing marketers to evaluate which traffic sources drive the most engaged instant app users and which of those convert to full installs. Airbridge supports tracking across the instant-to-install conversion path, giving marketers visibility into the full user journey.

How to implement instant apps for user acquisition

Implementing an instant app involves both technical setup and strategic decisions about which parts of the app to expose.

  1. Define the instant experience. Choose a specific, high-value feature or flow to include in the instant module. For a game, this might be the first level. For an e-commerce app, it might be the product browsing or checkout flow. The goal is to showcase value quickly without replicating the entire app.

  2. Install the Google Play Instant SDK. In Android Studio, configure your project to support instant apps by adding the required dependencies and designating your chosen activity or feature module as the instant entry point.

  3. Respect size and permission constraints. Instant modules must meet Google's size requirements. Avoid requesting sensitive permissions that are not available to instant apps, as these will block the experience from loading.

  4. Generate and distribute deep links. Assign a URL to your instant app module. Share this URL through paid search campaigns, social media ads, SMS, email, and QR codes. Each of these entry points allows users to reach the instant experience without visiting the Play Store.

  5. Add a clear install prompt within the experience. Place a prominent call-to-action inside the instant app that invites users to install the full version. Trigger this prompt after the user has experienced meaningful value, not immediately upon launch.

  6. Set up attribution tracking. Use an MMP like Airbridge to track events during the instant app session and monitor the conversion from instant use to full install. Tag your distribution links with tracking parameters so you can attribute instant-to-install conversions back to specific campaigns and channels.

  7. Test and iterate. Use beta testing tools to validate the instant experience across device types before launch. Monitor engagement metrics and install conversion rates to identify which instant app flows drive the best downstream outcomes.
