Show Drops, Template Ads and an Annual That Costs More

Disney+ is the streaming home for Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic titles, developed by Disney Electronic Content, Inc., with bundles that add Hulu and ESPN. As of Oct 2026 it makes an estimated $51M a month from 3M downloads, 246.4x the Entertainment median revenue on 100.0x the median downloads. Its most unusual move is ad volume with show-by-show copy: 843 active Meta ads, 36.7x the category median of 23, each top ad naming a series or film and ending with Sign Up to Watch.

Key takeaways

  • Monthly plans run $12.49, $12.99, $21.49 and $21.99, and the single annual plan is $214.99, which is 143% of 12 months at the cheapest monthly price. The annual costs more, not less.
  • The latest 50 reviews average 1.62, with 38 one-star. 20 of them, 40.0%, mention price or subscription, and 19 are negative, mostly about ads inside a paid plan and repeated logouts.
  • Best Entertainment ranks are #5 in Denmark and Finland, #7 in Sweden and #8 in Spain and France. Estimated lifetime Meta spend is only $41.8, 86.5% of it in the United States and 72.2% on ages 25-34.

The measurement gap

top ads send traffic to the web, not the store

1. A new ad for every show drop

Disney+ runs 843 active Meta ads from 1344 found, 36.7x the Entertainment median of 23, and spends nothing on Apple Search Ads. Read the top 13 and the logic is release marketing, not app marketing. One line sells the second season of Rivals, another Avatar: Fire and Ash, another the final season of The Bear, another X-Men '97 season 2, and each ends with Sign Up to Watch or Sign Up to Stream Now. Every one of the 13 links to the web rather than the App Store, so the sign-up happens off platform. Only 4 of 13 are video; 8 are static images, which is cheap to produce per title. The longest has run 144 days and the median is 114. For Disney+, each release is its own ad, with a fixed call to action and checkout on the web.

2. Five ads shipped with the template unfilled

Five of Disney+'s 13 longest running Meta ads carry the literal copy a blank brand-name placeholder, a dynamic placeholder that never resolved to a name. They have run 102 to 116 days anyway, 4 of them as images and 1 as video, all linking to the web. Two readings are possible. Either the creative is image-led enough that the text box does not matter, or nobody is reviewing ads once they are live at this volume. With 843 ads active, the second is likely. The ad library trend backs the scale: active Meta ads rose from 695 to 818 over 37 days, up 17.7%, with a peak of 861. For a smaller team the lesson is procedural: when you use catalog or dynamic ads, pull the live library once a week and read the copy field, because a broken token can outlive your best creative.

3. The annual plan that costs more

Disney+ lists 10 in-app purchases at 5 prices. Monthly options are $12.49 and $12.99 for the basic tiers and $21.49 and $21.99 for Premium and the Hulu bundle. The one annual plan, Disney+ Premium, costs $214.99, which is 143% of 12 months at the cheapest monthly price, so a year of the top tier costs more than a year of the bottom tier paid monthly. There is no annual discount for the entry plan. That shape pushes casual viewers to monthly and lets them churn between show drops, which is what the show-by-show ads are built to reverse. Recent reviews reflect the strain: 20 of the latest 50, 40.0%, mention price or subscription and 19 are negative. Smaller apps should at least offer a discounted annual on the entry tier if they want to keep churn out of the ad budget.

4. The measurement gap

Disney+ spends on 843 Meta ads that each push one title and send every click to a web sign-up page, while the app itself holds 4 monthly prices and a $214.99 annual. The open question is which show drop brings a viewer who is still paying after the season ends, and whether that viewer came through the web ad or found the app on the store.

How to measure a playbook like Disney+'s

Disney+ runs 843 Meta ads that each promote one show and link to the web, so the hard part is connecting a Rivals or Avatar ad click to a subscriber who is still active months later.

  1. 01

Connect Meta and see cost next to results

Spend, installs and in-app events land in one report by campaign, so channels get compared on the same numbers.

  2. 02

Send trial and purchase events back to Meta

Core sends mobile postbacks to Meta and three other channels, so the algorithm can optimize for payers instead of cheap installs. Growth adds more channels.

  3. 03

Connect RevenueCat for revenue by campaign

Subscription revenue joins the install data, so each campaign shows return on ad spend, not only cost per install.

How we built this teardown

  • Revenue and downloads are third-party estimates from AppKittie, snapshot Oct 16, 2026. Store intelligence estimates for a single app can be off by 30% or more. Treat them as a range, not a figure from the developer. Daily revenue and download series cover 89 days ending Oct 18, 2026.
  • Ads come from the public Meta Ad Library. "Days live" counts days since an ad first appeared. Spend and audience breakdowns start from Meta's EU transparency figures; country splits outside the EU are AppKittie models.
  • Prices, ratings and ranks come from the App Store (US storefront) on the same date. Prices differ by country and by paywall offer. Review stats use the latest 50 US reviews from Apple's public review feed.
  • Category medians are computed across 80 Entertainment apps with active Meta ads in our set of 860 subscription apps.
  • Written by Hyunjong Choi. Ads, prices and estimates are refreshed every 30 to 90 days. Updated Oct 19, 2026.
