View-through attribution (VTA)
What is View-through attribution (VTA)?
View-through attribution (VTA) is a measurement method that credits a conversion to an ad impression even when the user did not click on the ad. If a user views an ad and then completes a desired action, such as installing an app or making a purchase, within a defined lookback window, that conversion is attributed to the viewed ad. VTA is widely used in mobile advertising to capture the influence of brand and display campaigns that drive user behavior without generating a direct click.
How it works
VTA works by recording an ad impression event when a user is served an ad, then checking whether that user completes a target conversion within a configured view-through attribution window. If the conversion occurs within that window and no click-based attribution applies, the impression receives credit for the conversion.
Impression Recording
When an ad is displayed, the ad server or measurement platform logs the impression along with a user identifier, a timestamp, and the associated campaign. This impression record is stored for the duration of the attribution window.
Conversion Matching
When a user converts, the attribution platform checks for a matching click first. If no click-based attribution is found, the platform looks for a recent qualifying impression from the same user. If a match exists within the view-through window, the conversion is assigned to that impression source.
Attribution Windows
VTA windows are typically shorter than click-through windows. Common configurations range from 1 to 7 days, though display and video campaigns sometimes use longer windows of up to 30 days. The window length directly affects how many conversions receive impression-based credit, so setting an appropriate window is critical to avoiding inflated attribution.
Priority Hierarchy
Most attribution platforms, including Airbridge, apply a priority hierarchy where click-through attribution takes precedence over view-through attribution. If both a click and an impression qualify for the same conversion, the click receives credit. VTA only applies when no valid click touchpoint exists.
Why it matters
View-through attribution matters because a significant portion of advertising influence operates through brand exposure rather than direct interaction. Users who see a display or video ad may later search for the product, visit the app store organically, or convert through another channel without ever clicking the original ad. Without VTA, these conversions would appear as organic, making it impossible to measure the true contribution of impression-based campaigns.
For advertisers running connected TV, programmatic display, or video campaigns, VTA is often the only available attribution method because these formats are not always clickable. Excluding VTA from measurement means systematically undervaluing upper-funnel and brand advertising investments.
VTA also enables more accurate budget allocation. When marketers can see which impression-based campaigns contribute to conversions, they can make informed decisions about increasing or reducing spend on channels that do not drive direct clicks but meaningfully influence downstream behavior. This is particularly relevant for retargeting campaigns, where a display ad may reinforce intent that was originally built through another channel.
How to measure view-through attribution accurately
Measuring VTA accurately requires careful configuration of attribution windows, priority rules, and fraud controls.
1. Define an appropriate attribution window. Set the view-through window based on your campaign type. Short-cycle products or app install campaigns typically use 1-day windows. Brand awareness and video campaigns may justify 7-day or longer windows. Avoid defaulting to the maximum window without considering your conversion cycle, as longer windows increase the risk of false attribution.
2. Establish click-over-impression priority. Confirm that your attribution platform applies click-through attribution before view-through attribution. This prevents impression sources from claiming credit for conversions that were actually driven by a direct click.
3. Require a minimum viewability threshold. Do not attribute conversions to impressions that were never genuinely visible. Apply viewability standards, such as requiring that at least 50% of an ad was in view for a minimum duration, before an impression qualifies for VTA credit.
4. Monitor impression fraud signals. VTA is a known target for impression fraud because fraudulent actors can generate large volumes of fake impressions to claim attribution credit. Use an MMP like Airbridge to detect anomalous impression volumes, duplicate identifiers, and suspicious impression-to-conversion ratios.
5. Compare VTA and non-VTA results. Run attribution reports with and without view-through credit to understand how much VTA contributes to your total measured conversions. This comparison helps identify whether impression-based credit is proportionate and credible.
6. Align window settings with your media partners. Different ad networks and DSPs apply their own VTA defaults. Ensure that your MMP settings match your agreed measurement terms to avoid discrepancies between platform-reported and MMP-reported conversions.
