What is Tracking parameter?
A tracking parameter is a key-value pair appended to a URL as a query string to capture data about how users arrive at a destination. Tracking parameters enable marketers to attribute traffic and conversions to specific campaigns, channels, and content. The most widely adopted standard for tracking parameters is UTM (Urchin Tracking Module), which defines a set of recognized parameter names used across analytics platforms.
How it works
Tracking parameters are added to the end of a URL following a question mark, with each parameter written as a key-value pair separated by an equals sign. Multiple parameters are chained together using ampersands.
For example, a URL promoting a product launch on TikTok might look like:
www.airbridge.io/new-product?utm_source=tiktok&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=new-product-launch
When a user clicks the link, the analytics platform reads the parameters from the URL and records them against the resulting session or conversion event.
Standard UTM Parameters
utm_source identifies the traffic origin, such as a specific platform, publisher, or newsletter. Examples include google, tiktok, or newsletter-weekly.
utm_medium identifies the marketing channel type, such as email, cpc, social, or banner. This allows comparison across channel categories rather than individual sources.
utm_campaign identifies the specific campaign or promotion the link belongs to, enabling performance comparison across simultaneous campaigns.
utm_term captures the keyword or search term associated with the click, most commonly used in paid search campaigns.
utm_content differentiates between multiple links within the same campaign, such as distinguishing a header banner from a footer link in the same email.
Custom Parameters
Beyond UTM conventions, marketers and measurement platforms can define custom parameters to pass additional context.
