What is Cost per click (CPC)?

Cost per click (CPC) is a mobile advertising pricing model where an advertiser pays a publisher each time a user clicks on their ad. CPC gives marketers direct control over spend relative to user engagement, making it one of the most widely used cost models in mobile advertising. It applies across ad networks, search platforms, and programmatic channels where click-based billing is supported.

How it works

In a CPC model, the advertiser and publisher agree that payment is triggered only when a user actively clicks an ad, not simply when the ad is displayed. This separates CPC from impression-based models like CPM, where cost is incurred regardless of user interaction.

CPC Formula

CPC is calculated by dividing the total spend on a campaign by the total number of clicks it generates.

CPC = Total Campaign Cost / Number of Clicks

For example, if a marketer spends $1,000 and receives 500 clicks, the CPC is $2.00 per click.

Factors That Influence CPC

CPC is not a fixed rate. It fluctuates based on several variables.

Audience targeting: Narrow targeting, such as specific demographics, behaviors, or geographic regions, can raise or lower CPC depending on demand for that audience segment.

Ad format and placement: Rich media, video, and interstitial ads typically command different CPC rates than standard banner formats due to differences in engagement and inventory scarcity.

Competitive bidding: On auction-based platforms, multiple advertisers bidding for the same audience or keyword drive CPC up. Less competitive segments yield lower CPC.

Platform and channel: Mobile CPC tends to differ from desktop CPC, as mobile inventory pricing reflects differences in traffic volume, user intent, and conversion behavior across platforms.

CPC in Auction Environments

Most programmatic and search advertising platforms use real-time bidding (RTB) to determine the final CPC. Advertisers set a maximum bid, and the auction determines the actual cost paid per click, which is often lower than the maximum bid. This makes bid strategy a core lever for controlling average CPC across campaigns.

Why it matters

CPC is a foundational metric for mobile marketers because it connects ad spend directly to measurable user actions rather than passive impressions. This makes it easier to evaluate whether a campaign is generating efficient engagement relative to its cost.

By tracking CPC alongside downstream metrics like conversion rate and lifetime value (LTV), marketers can assess the full cost efficiency of each click. A low CPC is not inherently good if the clicks do not convert. Conversely, a high CPC can be justified when the clicks consistently drive high-value users.

CPC also serves as an input for calculating return on ad spend (ROAS) and return on investment (ROI). If the revenue generated per customer exceeds the cost to acquire that customer, including the CPC paid to drive the initial click, the campaign is profitable. Monitoring CPC trends over time helps marketers detect shifts in competition, audience saturation, or creative fatigue before they significantly erode campaign performance.

For mobile measurement, platforms like Airbridge aggregate CPC data across channels alongside install and post-install event data, giving marketers a unified view of how click costs relate to actual user quality and downstream value.

How to use cost per click effectively in mobile campaigns

Using CPC effectively requires more than tracking the metric in isolation. The following steps help marketers get measurable value from CPC-based campaigns.

1. Set a target CPC based on conversion data. Before launching a campaign, calculate the maximum CPC you can afford given your average conversion rate and revenue per conversion. If your app generates $5 in LTV per install and converts 10% of clicks to installs, your break-even CPC is $0.50. Use this as your bid ceiling.

2. Segment campaigns by audience and channel. CPC varies significantly across audience segments and platforms. Run separate campaigns for different targeting parameters to isolate which segments deliver the best CPC-to-conversion ratio.

3. Monitor click quality, not just click volume. A high volume of clicks at a low CPC can mask poor-quality traffic. Use an MMP like Airbridge to connect click data with post-install behavior, such as in-app events, session depth, and retention rate. This reveals whether the clicks you are paying for are driving real user engagement.

4. Adjust bids based on performance data. Review CPC performance regularly and adjust maximum bids for underperforming segments. On programmatic platforms, automated bidding tools can optimize toward a target CPC while staying within budget constraints.

5. Compare CPC across cost models. CPC is one of several cost models available in mobile advertising. Compare its efficiency against CPM and CPI for your specific campaign goals. For brand awareness goals, CPM may be more efficient. For user acquisition goals, CPI or CPA may provide clearer performance accountability than CPC alone.

6. Watch for click fraud signals. Unusually high click volumes with low conversion rates can indicate click fraud or click spam. Use fraud detection tools to filter invalid clicks and ensure your CPC benchmarks reflect genuine user interest.
