Screenshots and why they convert

6 screenshots of up to 10. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: Step-by-step guided music lessons
  2. Screenshot 5: Learn with artists you love
  3. Screenshot 6: Play music that makes you happy

The easy way to learn guitar, bass & singing

    • guitarin name
    • singingnot in name
    What it shows
A falling-note play screen with numbered notes and a “Perfect!” label, above an “App Store Editor’s Choice” laurel badge.
    Why it converts
Says what the app teaches and shows the app in use in the first frame. The laurel badge is the app’s own printed claim and sits where a visitor sees it early.
  2. #2In search results

Explore over 10,000 songs & lessons

    • songsnot in name
    • lessonsnot in name
    What it shows
Two overlapping play screens, with Guitar, Bass and Singing choices shown as round photos of people playing.
    Why it converts
A concrete catalogue size gives a reason to expect enough to play. The three round choices tell visitors the app covers more than one instrument.
  3. #3In search results

    Master guitar chords & tabs

    • chordsnot in name
    • tabsnot in name
    What it shows
A chord diagram for G on a fretboard, a phone in landscape with a mic level meter, and an “INSTANT FEEDBACK” label.
    Why it converts
Names two things guitar learners look for. The feedback label says what the app does while you play, not only what it shows.
  4. #4

    Step-by-step guided music lessons

    • music lessonsnot in name
    What it shows
Small photo tiles labelled Basics, Riffs and Chords, a Level 2 lesson path with star ratings, and a “New On Yousician” row.
    Why it converts
Shows that lessons follow an order, which matters to beginners. The screen holds a lot of small text, so the caption carries the message.
  5. #5

    Learn with artists you love

      What it shows
Photo tiles of named artists, a song list with titles and genres, and an “EXCLUSIVE COURSES” label.
      Why it converts
Links learning to music people already like, an emotional reason to install. The named artists are real faces and names, which make the song list feel concrete.
    • #6

Play music that makes you happy

        What it shows
Genre badges such as Metal, Blues and Rock, and a “The Rockstar badge!” achievement screen with confetti.
        Why it converts
Shows rewards for progress. The caption talks about feeling, not features, so it says less about what the app does.

      Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

      120px
      60px
      40px
      • One symbol, a guitar headstock, says “guitar” before the name is read.
      • Green on dark charcoal matches the green highlight and dark play screens in the screenshots, so icon and gallery read as one brand.
      • No text and little detail, so the shape holds up at small sizes.
      1. 01

        Two-tier captions

A lead line, then the key words in heavy type.

      2. 02

        One idea per image

Each image sells one thing: what you learn, how big the library is, chords, lesson path, artists, rewards.

      3. 03

        Changing background colors

Green, orange, purple, pink and yellow backgrounds change from image to image. Layout, fonts and the dark app screens repeat on most images, so the set still reads as one system.

      4. 04

Photo tiles and labels break out of the frame

Round and square photos and bold slanted labels such as “INSTANT FEEDBACK” overlap the screens, so the point stays visible when the screen text is small.

      5. 05

Real photos of people and artists

Players and named artists give the app a human, familiar face.

      Where the points are

      1. Ask happy users for a rating+4 pts

4.6 stars from 139,166 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

      2. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

6 caption terms aren't in the app name: singing, songs, lessons, chords, tabs, music lessons. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

      Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

      • Name what the app does and show it in use in screenshot 1.
      • Put a printed trust claim, such as an editor’s pick, near the first image.
      • Use a concrete number in a caption instead of a vague promise.
      • Set the key words in each caption in heavy type.
      • Change the background color per image, but keep layout and fonts fixed.
      • Match the icon color to the screenshot highlight color.
      How it works

      How the ASO score works

      1. 01

        App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

      2. 02

        Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

      3. 03

        Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

      4. 04

        Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

      FAQ

      Common questions

      What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “Yousician: Learn & Play Guitar”, which uses 30. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. Yousician uses them for guitar, songs and chords.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. Yousician uses 6.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
