Screenshots and why they convert

8 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  2. Screenshot 5: Visual Hook First 3s Impact For Talking Video
  3. Screenshot 6: HD Recording Capture Stunning Talking Videos
  1. #1In search results

AI Thumbnail Boost CTR With AI Emotional Thumbnails

    • ai thumbnailnot in name
    What it shows
A phone screen with a video thumbnail reading “You are not ready for this…”, a “Views +106K” badge, an “Emotion On” label, and a grid of other thumbnails below.
    Why it converts
Opens on a named feature that creators look for, with a result badge that hints at the payoff. It shows thumbnails, not the video-making flow, so a visitor may not learn what the app is until the next image.
  2. #2In search results

AI Template Create Talking Video Fast

    • ai templatenot in name
    • talking videonot in name
    What it shows
A video editor with a person talking to camera, large “TALK MOVE INSPIRE” text over the frame, and a row of template thumbnails above the toolbar (Trim, Template, Captions, Effects).
    Why it converts
This is the first image that says what the app makes: talking videos. The template row shows how little work the user does. “Fast” is the benefit.
  3. #3In search results

AI Enhancer Boost Talking Video Quality

    • ai enhancernot in name
    • video qualitynot in name
    What it shows
A split view of a person in a car, with a blurry left half and a sharper right half, and options for Ultra HD, Portrait, Studio and AI HD below.
    Why it converts
A before and after split makes the result clear without reading. It answers a common worry: low-quality phone footage.
  4. #4

    Auto Captions Animated Text Style

    • auto captionsnot in name
    • animated textnot in name
    What it shows
A person on camera with a bold green “HEY CREATORS” caption on the video, a word-by-word timeline, and a grid of caption styles below.
    Why it converts
Auto captions is a feature people look for by name. The grid of styles shows there is a choice, and the big green text is easy to read at small size.
  5. #5

Visual Hook First 3s Impact For Talking Video

    • visual hooknot in name
    What it shows
A person with large white wings added behind them, a “Hook” button, a timeline at 00:03, and a row of effect thumbnails.
    Why it converts
Names a goal creators care about, getting attention in the first seconds, and shows an effect that does it. The wings make the idea clear without text.
  6. #6

HD Recording Capture Stunning Talking Videos

    • hd recordingnot in name
    What it shows
A camera screen with a resolution picker (720P, 1080P, 2K, 4K), a split before and after view, and tools for Prompter, Filter, Retouch, Adjust and BG.
    Why it converts
Shows the app also records, with resolution choices a visitor can compare. Placed last, it reads as a supporting feature after the editing tools.

Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

120px
60px
40px
  • One shape, a letter V in two colors, with no extra detail. It is simple and recognizable.
  • The icon says nothing about video, so the name and screenshots must carry that meaning.
  • Blue and pink on black matches the glow behind the phone in every screenshot, so icon and gallery look like one brand.
  • No text and no photo, so it should hold up at small sizes.
  1. 01

    Feature name, then benefit

Each caption has a short bold feature name on top and a one-line benefit below. The feature names (AI Template, Auto Captions, Visual Hook) are terms creators look for.

  2. 02

    One feature per image

Each screenshot shows one tool in use. A phone screen is the main visual, so the idea is clear at a glance.

  3. 03

    Similar layout and background

Most images put a white caption on black at the top, a phone screen below, and a blue and pink glow behind. Swiping through feels like one set.

  4. 04

    People in most frames

Most screens feature a person on camera, which shows the app is for talking videos. The result is visible in the frame, not described in text.

  5. 05

    Before and after splits

The enhancer and recording screens use a split slider. The visitor sees the difference without reading.

Where the points are

  1. Ask happy users for a rating+6 pts

4.8 stars from 5,239 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

  2. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

9 caption terms aren't in the app name: ai thumbnail, ai template, talking video, ai enhancer, video quality, auto captions, animated text, visual hook, hd recording. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

  3. Win back installs

Downloads fell 2.8% while revenue rose 16.5%. A product page that converts more of its visitors wins installs back without more ad spend.

Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

  • Open with the result a visitor wants, and show the app making it.
  • Use a caption format of feature name plus one-line benefit.
  • Pick feature names in the words your users use.
  • Use large white text on a dark background so captions read at thumbnail size.
  • Show a before and after when the benefit is quality.
  • Keep the layout, background and glow the same on every image, and match them to your icon colors.
How it works

How the ASO score works

  1. 01

    App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

  2. 02

    Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

  3. 03

    Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

  4. 04

    Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

FAQ

Common questions

What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “Vmake Labs: create viral video”, which uses 30. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. Vmake Labs uses them for ai thumbnail, ai template and ai enhancer.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. Vmake Labs uses 8.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
