Screenshots and why they convert

9 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  2. Screenshot 5: Admires Not Following You
  3. Screenshot 6: Growth Trends & Stats

    Follower Analytics For Instagram

    • follower analyticsnot in name
    What it shows
A stats home screen with 682 followers, 457 following, a “Not Follow You Back” row (186) and tiles such as New Followers, Lost Followers and Profile Interactions.
    Why it converts
Names the platform and the job in the headline, and the screen shows the app in use. The tiles preview several features, so the screen is dense.
  2. #2In search results

    Not Following Back

    • not following backnot in name
    What it shows
A “Not Follow You Back” list with Unfollow buttons, an in-progress “Unfollowing… (21 / 32)” bar and an “Unfollow All (206)” button.
    Why it converts
Shows the action people come for: find who does not follow back and remove them in bulk. The caption is short and names a feature people look for.
  3. #3In search results

    Who Unfollowed You

    • who unfollowed younot in name
    What it shows
A “lost followers” list grouped by Today and Yesterday, with a count per day and Follow or Unfollow buttons.
    Why it converts
Answers a direct question a visitor already has. The day groups show how the history is organized.
  4. #4

    Profile Interactions

    • profile interactionsnot in name
    What it shows
A Profile Interactions list with Top Interactors and Secret Interactors cards, view counts per person and post times.
    Why it converts
Adds a different reason to install beyond follower counts. The caption is a label, so it does not say what the visitor gains.
  5. #5

    Admires Not Following You

    • admiresnot in name
    What it shows
A “Who Admires You” ranking with a crowned top profile and heart counts for each person.
    Why it converts
A ranking with a crown and heart scores is easy to read at a glance. The caption is a short claim about a specific list.
  6. #6

    Growth Trends & Stats

    • growth trendsnot in name
    What it shows
A Statistics Analysis screen with a New Followers line chart, a Post Analysis breakdown (Photo 55%) and the start of a Time Data chart.
    Why it converts
Closes on charts for people who want trends over time. The large headline and chart stay readable, though the chart carries little detail at small size.

Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

120px
60px
40px
  • One idea: two people outlines say “followers” before the name is read.
  • The pink arrow matches the pink and purple caption color in the screenshots.
  • No text and a plain dark background, so the shape stays clear at small sizes.
  1. 01

Platform named in the first caption

The first headline says “For Instagram”, so a visitor knows which network the app works with before reading anything else.

  2. 02

Captions are the question people ask

“Who Unfollowed You” and “Not Following Back” are phrases a visitor might use when asking the question. Each image is one list or one screen.

  3. 03

    Two-line gradient captions

A pink-to-purple line sits above or below a white line in large type.

  4. 04

Same dark frame on most images

A dark gradient background, one phone frame and the same app colors in most images. The set reads as one system and matches the icon.

  5. 05

Screens show lists with action buttons

Most screens are lists with Follow, Unfollow or count badges, so the app looks like a tool you act in, not only a report.

Where the points are

  1. Ask happy users for a rating+10 pts

4.6 stars from 6,303 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

  2. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

6 caption terms aren't in the app name: follower analytics, not following back, who unfollowed you, profile interactions, admires, growth trends. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

  • Name the platform or context in the first caption.
  • Write captions as the question your visitor would ask.
  • Show one list or one result per screenshot.
  • Use large caption type with strong color contrast on the background.
  • Keep the icon color and the caption highlight color the same.
  • Add a rating, award or named source if you have one. It is missing here.
How it works

How the ASO score works

  1. 01

    App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

  2. 02

    Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

  3. 03

    Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

  4. 04

    Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

FAQ

Common questions

What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “Unfollowers: Followers Tracker”, which uses 30. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. Unfollowers uses them for follower analytics, not following back and who unfollowed you.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. Unfollowers uses 9.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
