Screenshots and why they convert

8 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: Practice quizzes anytime, anywhere
  2. Screenshot 5: Snap a photo, Ask AI
  3. Screenshot 6: AI powered by real student notes
  1. #1In search results

    Study for your exam

    • examnot in name
    What it shows
A cartoon student holding a phone, with a list of four features: Class recording, Ask AI, Quizzes, Student's notes. No app screen is shown.
    Why it converts
Names the outcome (study for an exam) and the four tools in one frame, so a visitor knows what the app is for. It uses an illustration, not UI, so the screen itself shows nothing of the product in use.
  2. #2In search results

    Record your class

    • record classnot in name
    What it shows
A transcript screen with a highlighted lecture line, a playback bar at 00:22 of 32:47 and tabs for Transcript, Summary and Quiz.
    Why it converts
Shows the first feature as a real screen. The tabs hint that one recording leads to a summary and a quiz.
  3. #3In search results

    Get free AI Summaries

    • ai summariesnot in name
    What it shows
A Summary tab with blurred text lines and white labels: Key Lecture Points, Detailed Notes, Exam Callouts, Q&A, Homework.
    Why it converts
The labels say what a summary contains, so the visitor sees the output without reading any text. “Free” in the caption is the app's own claim.
  4. #4

    Practice quizzes anytime, anywhere

    • practice quizzesnot in name
    What it shows
A quiz question with four answer choices, a progress bar at 2/5, an Explain button and a Next button.
    Why it converts
Shows how studying works inside the app: question, answer, explanation. The question card is enlarged past the phone frame, which keeps it readable when small.
  5. #5

    Snap a photo, Ask AI

    • ask ainot in name
    What it shows
The camera view over a printed page with a graph and handwritten notes, a scan frame, and the prompt “Capture a question, text, or anything”.
    Why it converts
Shows a concrete input a student already has: a photo of their own homework. “Ask AI” repeats the term from the first image.
  6. #6

AI powered by real student notes

    • student notesnot in name
    What it shows
A chat answer on linear regression with “12 sources” and a source card labelled with a course name, plus an “All Universities” filter.
    Why it converts
Explains where the answers come from, which is the app's own claim about what sets it apart. The source list gives the claim something visible to point to.

Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

120px
60px
40px
  • One shape, a white S, with no text. It carries the brand name's first letter.
  • Two colors only, black and white, so it stays simple at small sizes.
  • It does not hint at studying or notes. The name and the first screenshot do that job.
  • The screenshots use an off-white background with black captions, so the black-and-white palette carries over.
  1. 01

Study task in the first caption

The first image says “Study for your exam” and lists four tools. The visitor learns the use case before seeing any screen.

  2. 02

    One tool in most images

Recording, summaries, quizzes, photo questions and sources each get their own image, with a short two-line caption.

  3. 03

    Tabs tie the screens together

The recording screen shows Transcript, Summary and Quiz tabs, and the next two images show a summary and a quiz. This shows one flow, not separate features.

  4. 04

    Floating labels and enlarged cards

Labels like “Key Lecture Points” and the quiz card sit over or past the phone frame. Key content stays readable at small size.

  5. 05

Source claim in the last caption shown

“AI powered by real student notes” names where answers come from. The screen backs it with a source count and a course name.

Where the points are

  1. Ask happy users for a rating+6 pts

4.8 stars from 5,932 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

  2. Use the rest of the app name+2 pts

5 characters are free. Add the next most important search term.

  3. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

6 caption terms aren't in the app name: exam, record class, ai summaries, practice quizzes, ask ai, student notes. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

  • Open with the job the user wants done, such as “Study for your exam”.
  • List your main tools in image 1 if no single screen can show them.
  • Give each image one tool and a caption of about four words.
  • Show the real output, such as a quiz or a summary, not only a menu.
  • Enlarge the key card or label so it reads at small size.
  • If you claim a source for your content, show it on screen.
How it works

How the ASO score works

  1. 01

    App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

  2. 02

    Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

  3. 03

    Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

  4. 04

    Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

FAQ

Common questions

What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “Studocu: Notes & Practice”, which uses 25. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. Studocu uses them for exam, record class and ai summaries.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. Studocu uses 8.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
