Screenshots and why they convert

8 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: Smart Body Insights
  2. Screenshot 5: Log Meals Instantly
  3. Screenshot 6: Unleash Your Full Potential
  1. #1In search results

    Your Body's Blueprint, Reimagined

    • ai plannot in name
    What it shows
A readiness, cardio load and sleep dashboard over a mountain image, with a daily calorie-burn gauge and goal card below. Sub-line: “An AI plan that adapts to you in real time.”
    Why it converts
The headline is a general slogan, so it does not say what the app does. The sub-line and the dashboard carry the meaning.
  2. #2In search results

    Your Health Story, Written Daily

      What it shows
A month calendar of colored workout and sleep entries, with one week enlarged past the phone frame. Sub-line: “See how your body evolves one record, one day at a time.”
      Why it converts
The enlarged week row keeps the entries readable at small size. The headline is figurative and names no feature, so a visitor has to read the sub-line to learn it is a workout log.
    • #3In search results

      Train Like a Pro

        What it shows
A chat thread with a weekly plan strip of strength, cardio and rest days pulled out of the phone, and a list of daily workouts under it. Sub-line: “Scientifically Efficient & Fully Tailored to You.”
        Why it converts
The pulled-out plan strip shows the benefit, a plan built around you, in one glance. The headline and sub-line are claims with no example. The plan strip does the persuading.
      • #4

        Smart Body Insights

        • body insightsnot in name
        What it shows
A wellness data screen with heart and body fitness score tiles, a grid of data categories, and a blood oxygen card enlarged over the list. Sub-line: “Know whether to cut, bulk, or maintain.”
        Why it converts
The sub-line names a clear decision the data supports, which is more concrete than the headline. The enlarged card makes one number easy to read.
      • #5

        Log Meals Instantly

        • log mealsnot in name
        What it shows
A food diary chat with logged toast and chicken salad, a meal photo behind the phone, and a voice waveform reading “I had brown rice and chicken breast …”. Sub-line: “Speak or snap a photo to track your nutrition.”
        Why it converts
One feature, one action, and the headline says it in plain words. Voice and photo input are shown, not just described.
      • #6

        Unleash Your Full Potential

        • smart gymnot in name
        What it shows
A course list with Gym Monster workouts, each with level, length and a New tag, and one card enlarged. Sub-line: “Connect your Speediance Smart Gym for smarter workout.”
        Why it converts
The sub-line is the only place that shows the app works with the maker's own gym hardware. The headline is generic. Without the hardware, a visitor may not see why the courses matter.

      Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

      120px
      60px
      40px
      • One bold letter, an S with a star cut out, gives a single clear shape.
      • Black and white only, with no photo or UI copy. The shape stays distinct at small sizes.
      • The black background matches the dark screenshots, but the icon has no green, so the green accent in the gallery does not link back to it.
      1. 01

        Dark background, green glow

Most images use a black base with green light and dots. The set reads as one system.

      2. 02

        Headline plus gray sub-line

A bold white headline sits above or below the phone, with a gray sentence that explains it. The sub-line holds the concrete meaning.

      3. 03

Cards pulled out of the phone

A week row, a blood oxygen card and a course card are enlarged past the device frame. The key detail stays readable at small size.

      4. 04

        Slogans first, specifics later

The first three headlines are figurative: Blueprint, Health Story, Train Like a Pro. More specific captions, Smart Body Insights and Log Meals Instantly, come after.

      5. 05

        Hardware link shown late

The Speediance Smart Gym connection is named only in the last sub-line. The app is a companion to a device, and the set says so late.

      Where the points are

      1. Ask happy users for a rating+17 pts

4.4 stars from 13 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

      2. Use the rest of the app name+7 pts

5 characters are free. Add the next most important search term.

      3. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

4 caption terms aren't in the app name: ai plan, body insights, log meals, smart gym. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

      Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

      • Name what the app does in the first headline, in plain words.
      • Put your most concrete caption first, not after the slogans.
      • Use the headline for the benefit and the sub-line for detail, not the other way round.
      • If your app needs a device or account, say so early in the gallery.
      • Enlarge the one card or number that proves the claim so it reads at thumbnail size.
      • Keep sub-lines large enough to read at small size, or move the key words up.
      How it works

      How the ASO score works

      1. 01

        App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

      2. 02

        Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

      3. 03

        Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

      4. 04

        Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

      FAQ

      Common questions

      What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “Speediance - Home Workout”, which uses 25. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. Speediance uses them for ai plan.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. Speediance uses 8.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
