Screenshots and why they convert

9 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: Do Math Step by Step
  2. Screenshot 5: Summarize Docs, Links
  3. Screenshot 6: Streamline Your Studies
  1. #1In search results

    Scan & Solve

    • scannot in name
    • solvenot in name
    What it shows
    A phone camera frames a printed equation (4x² + 12x + 9 = 0) and a Solution card shows x = -3/2. The camera tabs read Other Tasks, Math, Quizzes & Tests.
    Why it converts
Shows the core use in one frame: point the camera at a problem, get an answer. The caption is two short words and the result is visible, so a visitor knows what the app does.
  2. #2In search results

    Excel in All Subjects

    • subjectsnot in name
    What it shows
Six rounded glass tiles with icons: Math, English, Chemistry, Physics, History, Economics.
    Why it converts
Widens the promise from math to school subjects. Large labels and one icon per tile keep it readable small. It is a list of topics, so it shows no screen of the app in use.
  3. #3In search results

    Nail Any Test

    • testnot in name
    What it shows
The same scan view on a multiple-choice question about the largest planet, with a Solution card answering Jupiter.
    Why it converts
Applies the scan idea to quizzes, a second use case students have. The caption speaks to the outcome, not the feature.
  4. #4

    Do Math Step by Step

    • mathnot in name
    What it shows
A calculator screen with a square-root expression and a Solution card that starts Step 1: Calculate the square root.
    Why it converts
Shows the app explains the work, not only the answer. This adds a reason to choose it for learning.
  5. #5

    Summarize Docs, Links

    • summarizenot in name
    What it shows
A Doc Master screen with a file named scan_299403.pdf and a link icon, with a Solution card of explanatory text.
    Why it converts
Adds a second job, summaries of files and links. The caption names the feature.
  6. #6

    Streamline Your Studies

    • study toolsnot in name
    What it shows
A Discover screen with Study Tools (Doc Master, Youtube Summary, Ask via Link) and Scan to Solve tiles for Math, Quizzes, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Other Tasks.
    Why it converts
Gives an overview of the whole app in one frame. The caption is general, so it works as a recap.

Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

120px
60px
40px
  • One shape, a letter S in a hexagon, with no extra text or detail.
  • The black background makes the bright gradient stand out at small sizes.
  • The icon does not hint at homework or school. The name and screenshots carry that message.
  1. 01

    Result in the first frame

Screenshot 1 shows a scanned equation and its answer together. The use and the outcome are both visible.

  2. 02

    Two-line captions, second line bold

Large black type with the second line in bold, on a pale background.

  3. 03

One use case in most screenshots

Scan and solve, subjects, tests, step-by-step math, summaries. Most images name one thing a student wants.

  4. 04

    Answer card over the phone

A Solution card holds the answer in four of the six images.

  5. 05

    Colored tiles echo the icon

Bright tiles and green accents on dark screens carry the icon's colorful gradient into the gallery.

Where the points are

  1. Ship an update+15 pts

The last update was 232 days ago. A new version also refreshes the "What's New" notes people read before they download.

  2. Ask happy users for a rating+10 pts

4.6 stars from 5,746 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

  3. Use the rest of the app name+2 pts

5 characters are free. Add the next most important search term.

  4. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

7 caption terms aren't in the app name: scan, solve, subjects, test, math, summarize, study tools. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

  • Show the result of the main task in screenshot 1, not only the input.
  • Write short captions with the key words in bold.
  • Give each screenshot one use case people already look for.
  • Keep body text on cards large enough to read at thumbnail size, or cut it.
  • Reuse the icon's colors in tiles and accents so the set reads as one brand.
  • Put a broad overview screen after the strongest use cases, not first.
How it works

How the ASO score works

  1. 01

    App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

  2. 02

    Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

  3. 03

    Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

  4. 04

    Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

FAQ

Common questions

What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “Solvo: AI Homework Helper”, which uses 25. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. Solvo uses them for scan, subjects and test.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. Solvo uses 9.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
