Screenshots and why they convert

7 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: Exclusive Mineral Encyclopedia
  2. Screenshot 5: Physical Properties
  3. Screenshot 6: Chemical Properties
  1. #1In search results

    Identify Rock Instantly

    • identify rocknot in name
    What it shows
A hand holds a tilted phone over a stream bed, with a red stone on screen and a “Red Jasper” label over a map.
    Why it converts
Names the job in the first frame: point at a rock and get its name. The photo of real stones in water fits the subject, but the map behind the label adds a second idea.
  2. #2In search results

    Know its value

    • valuenot in name
    What it shows
A red stone in a camera view and result cards: Red Jasper, a type of Quartz, hardness 6.5-7, formula SiO2.
    Why it converts
Gives the second reason to install: the result comes with facts about the stone. “Value” is a word a collector may look for, though the cards show properties, not a price.
  3. #3In search results

    Organize Your Collection

    • collectionnot in name
    What it shows
A collection list with stone photos, names, formulas and locations, plus Collection, Wishlist and History tabs.
    Why it converts
Shows what happens after the scan: you keep a personal catalog. This suits people who gather stones and want to come back to the app.
  4. #4

    Exclusive Mineral Encyclopedia

    • mineralnot in name
    • encyclopedianot in name
    What it shows
A home screen with Valuation, Identify and Detector buttons, a Popular Gems card (Diamond, Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire) and guide tiles.
    Why it converts
Shows reading content next to the scanner, and names gems people look up. “Exclusive” is the app's own word and the screen does not back it up.
  5. #5

    Physical Properties

    • physical propertiesnot in name
    What it shows
A Quartz detail page with an enlarged card listing crystal system, colors and luster.
    Why it converts
A feature-name caption for people who want detail. The card is enlarged so the rows are readable, but the caption names a section and not a benefit.
  6. #6

    Chemical Properties

    • chemical propertiesnot in name
    What it shows
An Amethyst-style detail page with an enlarged card listing chemical class, formula and elements.
    Why it converts
Repeats the layout of the previous image for a different section. It shows depth of data, but it is close to a repeat and does not add a new reason to download.

Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

120px
60px
40px
  • One symbol, a rock inside camera-scan brackets, says “scan a rock” before the name is read.
  • The brown and cream palette matches the sand-colored backgrounds in the later screenshots.
  • No text and a plain background, so the shape stays clear at small sizes.
  1. 01

    Short captions

Each caption is two or three words, such as “Identify Rock Instantly”. They are easy to read at small size.

  2. 02

    Result card over the phone

On two images a card is enlarged past the device frame, so the property rows stay readable in a small view.

  3. 03

    Photo background, then sand

The first image uses a stream-bed photo with white text. Later images use a sand gradient with dark text. The change is visible when swiping.

  4. 04

    Scan, then keep, then learn

The order goes from identifying a stone to its facts, then to a saved collection, then to the reference library.

  5. 05

    Feature names as captions

The last two captions name sections of the detail page. They say what the screen is, not what the visitor gets.

Where the points are

  1. Use the rest of the app name+7 pts

5 characters are free. Add the next most important search term.

  2. Ask happy users for a rating+2 pts

4.7 stars from 82,407 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

  3. Ship an update+1 pts

The last update was 42 days ago. A new version also refreshes the "What's New" notes people read before they download.

  4. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

7 caption terms aren't in the app name: identify rock, value, collection, mineral, encyclopedia, physical properties, chemical properties. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

  • Put the core action and its result in the first image, in plain words.
  • Keep one idea per image, and keep each caption to a few big words.
  • Write captions as a benefit, not as the name of a screen.
  • Enlarge the key card or number so it reads at thumbnail size.
  • Pick one background and text style for the whole set, or change it on purpose.
  • Keep the icon palette close to the screenshot colors.
How it works

How the ASO score works

  1. 01

    App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

  2. 02

    Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

  3. 03

    Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

  4. 04

    Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

FAQ

Common questions

What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “Rock Identifier: Stone ID”, which uses 25. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. Rock Identifier uses them for identify rock, value and collection.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. Rock Identifier uses 7.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
