Screenshots and why they convert

6 screenshots of up to 10. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: Your pet your other self
  2. Screenshot 5: Make every sunset unforgettable
  3. Screenshot 6: Birthday videos in seconds
  1. #1In search results

A little dance a lot of joy

    • dancenot in name
    What it shows
A smiling baby mid-dance in a video, with a small photo of the same baby in a circle, a 00:01 to 00:08 timeline, a “Describe your edit” field, Photo and Video tabs and a Create button.
    Why it converts
Shows the result first: a short video made from one photo. The circled source photo with an arrow makes the idea clear in one glance. The caption sells a feeling, not a feature, but it never says “AI” or “video”, so the first frame leans on the picture to explain the app.
  2. #2In search results

    Your love your moment

      What it shows
A black-and-white couple photo inside a heart shape, with two small face photos joined by a plus sign and a Save button.
      Why it converts
The plus sign between two photos shows the input and the result together. It speaks to a second use, couples and keepsakes.
    • #3In search results

Step into your iconic 80s era

      • 80snot in name
      What it shows
A four-photo grid of retro 80s styled portraits, a “Retro 80s Styles” label with “4 Photos”, a Generate button and a Premium tag.
      Why it converts
Names a specific style people may look for. The grid shows range in one frame. The Premium tag shows up front that this feature is paid.
    • #4

      Your pet your other self

      • petnot in name
      What it shows
Two stacked black-and-white images where a face is paired with a pet's face, a “2 Photos” label, a Generate button and a Premium tag.
      Why it converts
A playful, shareable idea that needs no explanation. “Pet” is a concrete word a person might look for. The caption is short and uses parallel lines.
    • #5

      Make every sunset unforgettable

      • sunsetnot in name
      What it shows
A woman in a white dress among hot air balloons at sunset, with her source photo in a circle and Share and Save buttons.
      Why it converts
A travel-style photo result with the source photo shown again. The caption is a general promise rather than a named feature.
    • #6

      Birthday videos in seconds

      • birthday videosnot in name
      What it shows
A woman in a black dress holding a cake, with her source photo in a circle, a video timeline, a Video label, a Generate button and a Premium tag.
      Why it converts
Names a clear use case and a time benefit in few words. “Birthday videos” is a phrase people look for, and it matches the video side of the app name.

    Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

    120px
    60px
    40px
    • One symbol, a play triangle, points to video before the name is read.
    • The cyan and purple edges echo the purple background used in the screenshots, so icon and gallery look like one brand.
    • No text, and a single shape on a dark ground, so it stays clear at small sizes. It does not say “photo” or “AI”, so the name carries that.
    1. 01

Result first, with the source photo

Most screens show a finished image or video and a small circle with the original photo and an arrow. The before and after is clear without reading.

    2. 02

      Two-line captions

Captions have two lines, with the key phrase in bold white capitals.

    3. 03

Different use case on each image

Dance, couples, 80s style, pets, sunsets and birthdays. Each image speaks to a different reason to try the app.

    4. 04

      Same frame and background

A purple starry background, a centered phone and the same caption position on most images. Swiping feels like one set.

    5. 05

      Premium tags on some screens

Some screens show a Premium tag next to Generate. A visitor sees which features cost extra before they install.

    Where the points are

    1. Ask happy users for a rating+11 pts

4.5 stars from 8,208 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

    2. Use the rest of the app name+2 pts

6 characters are free. Add the next most important search term.

    3. Ship an update+1 pts

The last update was 36 days ago. A new version also refreshes the "What's New" notes people read before they download.

    4. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

5 caption terms aren't in the app name: dance, 80s, pet, sunset, birthday videos. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

    Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

    • Show the finished result in the first image, not the menu that makes it.
    • Show the input next to the output when your app transforms something.
    • Give each screenshot one use case a visitor can recognize as their own.
    • Name the specific use, like “birthday videos”, instead of a general promise.
    • Keep one frame, one background and one caption position across the set.
    • Add a rating, award or user count if you have a real one. This set shows none.
    How it works

    How the ASO score works

    1. 01

      App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

    2. 02

      Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

    3. 03

      Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

    4. 04

      Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

    FAQ

    Common questions

    What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “ReelMe: AI Photo & Video”, which uses 24. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. ReelMe uses them for dance and 80s.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. ReelMe uses 6.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
