Screenshots and why they convert

6 screenshots of up to 10. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: Save history
  2. Screenshot 5: Create any codes
  3. Screenshot 6: Share to anyone
  1. #1In search results

    Scan QR Codes

    • qr codesnot in name
    What it shows
A phone camera view of a cafe table sign reading “SCAN ME”, with an enlarged QR code and a red scan line over it. A tab bar shows Scanner, History, My Codes and Settings.
    Why it converts
Says what the app does in the first frame and shows a real scanning moment. The enlarged code keeps the action readable at search-result size.
  2. #2In search results

    Scan Barcodes

    • barcodesnot in name
    What it shows
A barcode panel with a red scan line, enlarged over a camera view of two chip bags on a shelf.
    Why it converts
Adds a second job the name does not state. It shows the app handles more than QR codes.
  3. #3In search results

    Scan in bulk

    • scan in bulknot in name
    What it shows
A shipping label with several barcodes and QR codes, each with its own red scan line.
    Why it converts
Shows a use that goes beyond one-off scans. The many codes in one frame make “bulk” easy to understand without reading more.
  4. #4

    Save history

    • historynot in name
    What it shows
The History screen with folders for Barcodes, Phone and Favorites, and a list of recent scans such as Website and Wi-Fi.
    Why it converts
Shows what happens after a scan, which answers whether results are kept.
  5. #5

    Create any codes

    • create codesnot in name
    What it shows
A QR code and a barcode generator, each with a website field and a button, on two overlapping cards.
    Why it converts
Shows that the app also makes codes, not only reads them. This gives a second reason to install.
  6. #6

    Share to anyone

    • sharenot in name
    What it shows
An iOS share sheet over a blurred screen, with an Export file, contact avatars and AirDrop, Messages, Mail and WhatsApp.
    Why it converts
Shows that results can leave the app through apps people already use. The sheet is familiar, so the benefit needs no explanation.

Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

120px
60px
40px
  • One idea, a code under a red scan line, says “scanner” without any text.
  • Black on white, with the red line as the single accent.
  • The red scan line also appears in the first three screenshots, so icon and gallery share one visual cue.
  1. 01

    Verb-first captions

Each caption opens with a short verb line: Scan, Save, Create or Share. The second line says what or how.

  2. 02

    One job per screenshot

Each image sells one thing: scan codes, scan barcodes, scan in bulk, keep history, create codes, share. The first two cover QR codes and barcodes.

  3. 03

Panels break out of the phone

Several images put a zoomed panel over the app screen, so the key detail stays readable when the image is small.

  4. 04

    Blue frame across most images

A solid blue band holds the caption on most images. Swiping feels like one set, not separate ads.

  5. 05

    Real scenes before settings

The first screens show a cafe sign, chip bags and a shipping label. The app shows its use before any list or form.

Where the points are

  1. Use the rest of the app name+20 pts

14 characters are free. Add the next most important search term.

  2. Ask happy users for a rating+2 pts

4.7 stars from 670,237 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

  3. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

6 caption terms aren't in the app name: qr codes, barcodes, scan in bulk, history, create codes, share. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

  • Name the main job in screenshot 1 and show it happening on a real object.
  • Start captions with one short verb and name the object after it.
  • Give each screenshot one job, and put the jobs your users want most first.
  • Enlarge the key panel past the device frame so it reads at thumbnail size.
  • Keep one background color and one caption style across the set.
  • If you have no rating or press to show, say so in your test plan and try one trust element in a single screenshot.
How it works

How the ASO score works

  1. 01

    App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

  2. 02

    Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

  3. 03

    Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

  4. 04

    Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

FAQ

Common questions

What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. QR Code Reader · uses them for qr codes, barcodes and scan in bulk.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. QR Code Reader · uses 6.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
