Screenshots and why they convert

7 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  2. Screenshot 5: Food Ranking
  3. Screenshot 6: Multiple actions to Choose
  1. #1In search results

    Mass Exercise Plan

    • exercise plannot in name
    What it shows
A before-and-after pair of illustrated bodies with a “30 Day” badge, above a plan card for days 28 to 30 with a chest warm-up and a Start button.
    Why it converts
Shows a clear outcome and a plan to get there, which tells a visitor this is a workout app. It does not say anything about walking or rewards, which is what the app name promises.
  2. #2In search results

    Aging Face Prediction

    • face predictionnot in name
    What it shows
A young face in a circle with an arrow to an older, grey-haired version, and four options along the bottom: Junk food, Drugs, Feep fit, Natural.
    Why it converts
A curiosity hook that is easy to understand at a glance. It is a different topic from exercise, so a visitor may wonder what the app is really about.
  3. #3In search results

    Visual Action Guidance

    • exercise guidancenot in name
    What it shows
An anatomy-style figure on a bench with the worked muscles in red, a row of exercise video thumbnails, and a sound button.
    Why it converts
Shows how an exercise is taught, which answers “will I know what to do?”. The small thumbnails and labels are hard to read at search-result size.
  4. #4

    Personalized Recipes

    • recipesnot in name
    What it shows
A week strip with one day selected, and meal cards for breakfast, lunch and dinner with protein, fat and carb amounts.
    Why it converts
Food photos and a simple day view make the feature easy to picture. It adds a meal-planning reason to download, on top of exercise.
  5. #5

    Food Ranking

    • food rankingnot in name
    What it shows
A “Low calorie fruits Ranking” list with filter chips (Calorie, Purine, Vitamin, Mineral) and a View all button.
    Why it converts
A browsable list. It is one more topic added to the set, further from the app name.
  6. #6

    Multiple actions to Choose

    • workoutsnot in name
    What it shows
A workout list with goal chips (Fat loss, Shaping, Relax), body-part filters on the left, and workout cards with time and calories.
    Why it converts
Shows choice and filters in a plain list, so a visitor sees there is more than one routine. The dense list is detailed for a thumbnail.

Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

120px
60px
40px
  • Two ideas in one icon, a shoe and coins, which fits “walk to earn” from the app name.
  • The white P shape is simple and bold on a dark background, so it stays readable at small sizes.
  • The gold coins are the only warm color. The screenshots use blue and white, so the icon and gallery do not share a color.
  • The sneaker and coin details are fine, and may blur at the smallest sizes.
  1. 01

Two-line captions with a blue keyword

Most captions are a bold white line plus a blue emphasis line, or blue on the first words.

  2. 02

    One feature per screenshot

Each image shows one thing: a plan, face prediction, exercise guidance, recipes, food ranking, workout list.

  3. 03

    Same frame on most images

Most images use a purple-grey gradient, a caption top left, and a phone below. Swiping feels like one set.

  4. 04

    Generic feature-name captions

Phrases like “Food Ranking” and “Multiple actions to Choose” name a feature but give little reason to download.

  5. 05

Screenshots and name promise different things

The name says walk and earn rewards. The captions cover exercise plans, faces, recipes and food lists. None mention walking or rewards.

Where the points are

  1. Ask happy users for a rating+11 pts

4.6 stars from 3,366 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

  2. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

6 caption terms aren't in the app name: exercise plan, face prediction, exercise guidance, recipes, food ranking, workouts. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

  • Make screenshot 1 show what your app name promises.
  • Check that captions and the app name tell one story.
  • Name a benefit in the caption, not only a feature.
  • Keep a short, large caption with the keyword in an accent color.
  • Use one frame and one gradient on every image so the set reads as one.
  • If you add a trust signal such as a rating or user count, put it in the first images.
How it works

How the ASO score works

  1. 01

    App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

  2. 02

    Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

  3. 03

    Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

  4. 04

    Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

FAQ

Common questions

What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “Perfit: Walk to Earn Rewards”, which uses 28. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. Perfit uses them for exercise plan, face prediction and exercise guidance.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. Perfit uses 7.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
