Screenshots and why they convert

7 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: 14 - Day Hourly Forecast
  2. Screenshot 5: Weather Radar 7+ Real-Time Forecast Layers
  3. Screenshot 6: Real-Time Radar Map

    NOAA Weather Radar Live Map

    • weather radarin name
    • noaain name
    What it shows
A Florida radar map with a search bar, an hourly strip (temperature and rain chance, sunrise), storm icons on the map, a layer menu on the right and a time slider at the bottom.
    Why it converts
Answers “what is this” right away: a live radar map with the app name as the headline. The hourly strip is enlarged past the phone frame, so it stays readable at search-result size.
  2. #2In search results

Hurricane Tracker Stay Alert & Stay Safe

    • hurricane trackernot in name
    What it shows
A radar map over Florida and a red card for “Hurricane Milton, Category 3” with wind speed, wind gust, latitude and longitude.
    Why it converts
Names a specific use case people look for, and the red card shows the data a user would look for. The second line is a general promise, so the first line does the work.
  3. #3In search results

    Lightning Tracker & Storm Alerts

    • lightning trackernot in name
    • storm alertsnot in name
    What it shows
A phone lock screen with three notifications: a lightning alert, a hurricane alert and a rain reminder. A tornado graphic sits at the bottom right.
    Why it converts
Shows the alerts as the user would receive them, which makes “storm alerts” concrete. A visitor can see the value without opening the app.
  4. #4

    14 - Day Hourly Forecast

    • hourly forecastnot in name
    What it shows
A Houston forecast screen: 63 degrees, thunderstorms, a red severe weather warning, a chance-of-rain bar chart by hour and a precipitation text block.
    Why it converts
Covers the plain forecast need for people who want more than the map. The warning banner and chart show the depth of the data, but the small text in the card is hard to read at thumbnail size.
  5. #5

Weather Radar 7+ Real-Time Forecast Layers

    • weather radarin name
    What it shows
A Weather maps menu listing precipitation, temperature, wind, snow depth and fires layers, with a loop speed control (slow, medium, fast) at the bottom.
    Why it converts
Shows the range of map layers in one list, so a visitor sees there is more than rain. The “7+” is the app's own printed claim.
  6. #6

    Real-Time Radar Map

    • radar mapin name
    What it shows
A radar map of Florida with a storm track, numbered cluster markers, a hurricane selector reading Helene and a play bar set to “in 4h”.
    Why it converts
Repeats the core feature with a different scene: the storm track and forecast play bar show the map moving forward in time. It restates the first image

Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

120px
60px
40px
  • One image, a radar view of a storm, points to weather radar without any text.
  • The green, yellow, red and magenta bands are the same colors used on the radar maps inside the screenshots.
  • It has no text, but it is a dense, colorful image. At small sizes the bands blur into a bright swirl, so it reads as a storm.
  1. 01

Bold white headline on a storm backdrop

Most images use large white type over a dark blue sky with rain or lightning.

  2. 02

    Plain feature names as captions

Captions use plain feature names: weather radar, hurricane tracker, lightning tracker, hourly forecast, radar map. Each caption names one thing.

  3. 03

Cards break out of the phone

The hourly strip and the hurricane card are enlarged past the device frame. The key numbers stay readable at small sizes.

  4. 04

Real scenes with real place names

Florida, Houston and a named hurricane appear on screen. The data looks like something a visitor could use today.

  5. 05

    Alerts shown as notifications

The lock screen image shows the alerts the way a user receives them, so a visitor sees the result and not a settings screen.

Where the points are

  1. Ask happy users for a rating+10 pts

4.5 stars from 13,164 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

  2. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

4 caption terms aren't in the app name: hurricane tracker, lightning tracker, storm alerts, hourly forecast. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

  • Put the core use and the app name in the headline of screenshot 1.
  • Name each screenshot after one feature, in the words your users use.
  • Enlarge the key card or number past the device frame so it reads in search results.
  • Show alerts or outputs the way users receive them, not the settings behind them.
  • Keep one background style and one caption style across the set.
  • Add a printed trust signal, such as a rating, a data source or a user count, if you have a true one.
How it works

How the ASO score works

  1. 01

    App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

  2. 02

    Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

  3. 03

    Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

  4. 04

    Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

FAQ

Common questions

What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. NOAA Weather Radar Live Map uses them for weather radar, hurricane tracker and lightning tracker.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. NOAA Weather Radar Live Map uses 7.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
