Screenshots and why they convert

5 screenshots of up to 10. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: Personal homepage
  2. Screenshot 5: Interested friends
  1. #1In search results

    Trendy live

    • livenot in name
    What it shows
A Recommend list of live rooms with a title, ID, small avatars and a flame count each, under a Follow tab. A party-popper sticker overlaps one row.
    Why it converts
Shows a list of live rooms, so a visitor sees there is a feed to browse. It does not say what you do in a room or who is in it, so the first frame leaves the main use to guesswork.
  2. #2In search results

    Voice party

    • voice partynot in name
    What it shows
A live room with a host seat and eight guest seats shown as round photos with country flags, a chat feed below, and emoji and gift stickers.
    Why it converts
Shows what a voice party looks like: seats, flags and a running chat. The busy room is hard to read at small size, but the caption tells you the idea.
  3. #3In search results

    Share moments

      What it shows
A Square feed with posts: a text line, photo grids, a Follow button on each post and a Post button at the bottom.
      Why it converts
Adds a second use beyond live rooms: posting photos and text. The feed layout is familiar, so it needs little explanation.
    • #4

      Personal homepage

        What it shows
A profile page with a blurred photo header, an avatar, Follow 200 and Follower 881 counts, and a grid of icons such as Go Live, Recharge and Blocked.
        Why it converts
Shows account tools, including going live and recharging. It is a settings-style screen, so it says little about why to install.
      • #5

        Interested friends

        • friendsnot in name
        What it shows
Another user's profile with a Follow button, 26 Follow and 88.1w Follower counts, an age, and a timeline of photo posts.
        Why it converts
Last frame hints at meeting people and following them.

      Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

      120px
      60px
      40px
      • Two overlapping speech bubbles say “chat” with one simple shape each.
      • Cyan, yellow and purple are flat, bright colors. The screenshots use a purple gradient, so the two feel related.
      • No text and little detail, so it should hold up at small sizes.
      1. 01

        One short title per screenshot

Each image has a two-word title in white at the top: Trendy live, Voice party, Share moments. The titles are short and easy to read.

      2. 02

        Same frame on most images

Most images use a purple-blue gradient, a white phone frame cropped at the bottom and a floating sticker. Swiping through feels like one set.

      3. 03

        Mostly screens, not outcomes

Most titles name screens and features. Few say what a visitor gets, such as meeting new people.

      4. 04

Photos of people in most frames

Faces fill the feed, party seats and profiles, so the app reads as social. The UI text inside the phone is small.

      5. 05

        No trust signal

No rating, user count, award or press mention is printed on any image.

      Where the points are

      1. Ask happy users for a rating+25 pts

2.4 stars from 8 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

      2. Use the rest of the app name+22 pts

21 characters are free. Add the next most important search term.

      3. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

3 caption terms aren't in the app name: live, voice party, friends. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

      Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

      • Say in screenshot 1 what the visitor can do, not only what the screen is called.
      • Write titles as a benefit or action, such as “Meet people live”, not a screen name.
      • Keep one frame style across the set, as this app does, and match it to the icon colors.
      • Put your strongest reason to install first and weaker screens like settings last.
      • Add a real rating, user count or press line if you have one.
      • Crop busy screens to the part the title points at so it reads at thumbnail size.
      How it works

      How the ASO score works

      1. 01

        App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

      2. 02

        Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

      3. 03

        Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

      4. 04

        Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

      FAQ

      Common questions

      What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. Nala Chat uses them for live and voice party.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. Nala Chat uses 5.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
