Screenshots and why they convert

8 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  2. Screenshot 5: Scroll to Discover and Like
  3. Screenshot 6: See Your Mini Doll
  1. #1In search results

    Create Dance Videos

    • dance videosnot in name
    What it shows
A home screen with a “Dancing Baby” banner and a Try Now button, plus two Dancing Effects tiles of adults dancing.
    Why it converts
Names one concrete output, a dance video, and shows sample results right away. A visitor sees what the app makes without reading anything else.
  2. #2In search results

    Create Perfect Couple Portraits

    • couple portraitsnot in name
    What it shows
A Couple Portrait screen with four generated portraits of a couple in different styles, and a small round source photo over the grid.
    Why it converts
The small source photo next to the four results shows the before and after in one frame. The caption names a specific use case.
  3. #3In search results

    Change Your Hairstyle

    • hairstylenot in name
    What it shows
A Hair Changer screen with four hairstyle variations of one face, a small round source photo, and a Try other effects row with a Regenerate button.
    Why it converts
The variations make the promise easy to read at a glance. The effects row hints that there are more looks to try.
  4. #4

    Cartoonify Your Photos

    • cartoonnot in name
    What it shows
A Cartoonify screen with a cartoon-style image of two people and a dog, a small round source photo, and a Try other effects row.
    Why it converts
Repeats the same source-photo-to-result layout for a new effect. A one-word verb caption keeps the message short.
  5. #5

    Scroll to Discover and Like

      What it shows
A full-screen black-and-white “Family Portrait” image with a coin count of 6500 and three more portraits below.
      Why it converts
Describes how to browse inside the app, not what the visitor gets. This is a feature step, and it leaves out a result the visitor can picture.
    • #6

      See Your Mini Doll

      • mini dollnot in name
      What it shows
A Mini Doll screen with a 3D-style doll of a child holding a cupcake, and a small round source photo.
      Why it converts
Ends on a distinctive effect with one large result image. It gives a visitor one more reason to try the app.

    Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

    120px
    60px
    40px
    • One symbol, a radial burst of petals, with no text and no photo.
    • Teal and purple match the purple caption highlights in the screenshots, so icon and gallery share one palette.
    • The icon does not hint at photos or editing, so the name and screenshots have to carry that.
    1. 01

      Two-line captions

A large white verb line, then a second line with the last words in lavender. The verb and the object are easy to find.

    2. 02

      One effect per screenshot

Most images sell a single result: dance videos, couple portraits, hairstyles, cartoons, mini dolls.

    3. 03

      Source photo beside the result

A small round photo sits next to the generated images. A visitor sees the input and the output together.

    4. 04

      Same frame and background

A dark purple gradient with one centered phone on most images. The set reads as one system.

    5. 05

      Sample results do the selling

Large generated images fill most of the phone. Most screens show results, not menus.

    Where the points are

    1. Ask happy users for a rating+14 pts

4.6 stars from 660 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

    2. Ship an update+5 pts

The last update was 76 days ago. A new version also refreshes the "What's New" notes people read before they download.

    3. Use the rest of the app name+3 pts

8 characters are free. Add the next most important search term.

    4. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

5 caption terms aren't in the app name: dance videos, couple portraits, hairstyle, cartoon, mini doll. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

    Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

    • Open with the strongest result your app produces, and show it on screen 1.
    • Name a concrete output in the caption, such as “Dance Videos” or “Couple Portraits”.
    • Show the input next to the output so a visitor sees the change.
    • Give each screenshot one idea and one verb.
    • Keep one background and one phone frame across the set.
    • Make sure every caption says what the visitor gets, not how to use a screen.
    How it works

    How the ASO score works

    1. 01

      App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

    2. 02

      Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

    3. 03

      Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

    4. 04

      Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

    FAQ

    Common questions

    What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “Lumy AI - Photo Editor”, which uses 22. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. Lumy AI uses them for dance videos, couple portraits and hairstyle.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. Lumy AI uses 8.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
