Screenshots and why they convert

6 screenshots of up to 10. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: Chat and flirt, even without a match
  2. Screenshot 5: Show your true colors
  3. Screenshot 6: Discover suggested profiles daily
  1. #1In search results

    Find the perfect dating spot

    • dating spotnot in name
    What it shows
A dark map with colored pins for a cafe, a park, a walk and other places, and a “People near you” row with two profile cards (Sina, 22, Los Angeles; Matt, 23, New York).
    Why it converts
Opens with a place-based idea of what the app does, and the map and nearby profiles show how. “Dating spot” is large and easy to read, so the point reads at small size.
  2. #2In search results

Experience live dates, shows, and more

    • live datesnot in name
    What it shows
A live video view with a viewer chat (“Sent a rose”), a small second video tile with a timer, and a rose sticker.
    Why it converts
Shows a live format that a plain profile list does not. The big face and white text stay clear at small size.
  3. #3In search results

    Find singles in your area

    • singlesnot in name
    What it shows
A grid of profile cards, each with a name, age and city, and one marked “New”.
    Why it converts
Names the basic job of the app in plain words. The grid makes the content easy to understand at a glance.
  4. #4

Chat and flirt, even without a match

    • chatin name
    • flirtnot in name
    What it shows
A chat thread where one person writes about skating and the reply includes a photo of roller skates, plus a typing indicator and a message box.
    Why it converts
Names a specific rule (chat without a match) instead of a general “messaging” claim. The short thread shows what a first message can look like.
  5. #5

    Show your true colors

    • true colorsnot in name
    What it shows
A profile screen with a person in a pink hoodie, a verified-style check mark, and tags such as “Something serious”, “Non-smoker”, “5’ 7”” and “No children”.
    Why it converts
Shows how a profile expresses who you are. The tags give a visitor a concrete idea of what they would fill in. “True colors” is a general phrase and names no feature.
  6. #6

    Discover suggested profiles daily

    • suggested profilesnot in name
    What it shows
Two profile photos joined by a heart that reads 83%, a “You & Bruno” line, and an “I’m in!” reply to a roller skating date idea.
    Why it converts
Shows a match suggestion with a score, which gives a reason to open the app each day. The caption names the feature.

Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

120px
60px
40px
  • One heart shape, built from three colored forms, with no text.
  • Bright flat colors on a white field give strong contrast, and the shape holds at small sizes.
  • The red, yellow and blue of the icon return as accent colors in the captions and cards.
  1. 01

    Two-tone captions

A white line, then one key phrase in a yellow, pink or blue accent. The accent phrase is the part the eye lands on.

  2. 02

    One idea per screenshot

Places, live dates, singles nearby, chat, profile and daily suggestions each get their own image.

  3. 03

    Phone frame on dark backgrounds

Most images use a dark map or blurred-light backdrop and a white-outlined phone frame, so the set reads as one system.

  4. 04

    People as the main subject

Profile photos fill most of the frame. Names, ages and cities are printed on the cards, so the content looks real.

  5. 05

    Rules named in the caption

“Even without a match” states a specific feature rule, which is more concrete than a general slogan.

Where the points are

  1. Ask happy users for a rating+10 pts

4.5 stars from 11,256 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

  2. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

6 caption terms aren't in the app name: dating spot, live dates, singles, flirt, true colors, suggested profiles. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

  • Put the main use in the first caption, in plain words.
  • Give each screenshot one idea and one caption.
  • Set the key phrase of each caption in an accent color so it stands out.
  • Keep one frame, one backdrop style and one caption style across the set.
  • Name a specific rule or feature in a caption when it sets your app apart.
  • If you have a rating, award or user count, print it on an image. This set shows none.
How it works

How the ASO score works

  1. 01

    App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

  2. 02

    Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

  3. 03

    Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

  4. 04

    Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

FAQ

Common questions

What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “LOVOO - Dating App & Chat App”, which uses 29. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. LOVOO uses them for dating spot, live dates and singles.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. LOVOO uses 6.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
