Screenshots and why they convert

8 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: Talk Like It's Real Live Practice everyday conversations, from shopping to airports.
  2. Screenshot 5: Avoid awkward situations... ...by practicing them beforehand.
  3. Screenshot 6: Short lessons that fit into a busy schedule
  1. #1In search results

    Speak. Learn. Level Up.

      What it shows
A woman smiling and speaking into a phone held near her mouth, with an “Apple Apps we love 2026” laurel badge at the bottom.
      Why it converts
The frame shows a person speaking into a phone, but the image does not say which language or what the app teaches. The badge is the app's own printed claim and is a trust signal near the top of the gallery.
    • #2In search results

Learn at Your Own Pace Real conversations, real progress, tailored just for you.

        What it shows
The Home tab with streak and lesson counters, and an enlarged “Lesson 3 · Intermediate” card titled “Past Continuous vs Past Simple” with a Continue Lesson button.
        Why it converts
A real lesson card pulled out of the phone frame is easy to read. It shows that lessons have levels.
      • #3In search results

Hands-Free Learn while you drive. Wherever you go. No hands, no hassle.

        • hands-freenot in name
        What it shows
A lesson chat with a spoken-style exchange, “I was eating when the phone rang.”, and a large blue voice button breaking out of the top corner.
        Why it converts
Names one use case, learning without using hands, which gives a clear reason to choose a voice app. The paragraph under the headline may be hard to read in search results.
      • #4

Talk Like It's Real Live Practice everyday conversations, from shopping to airports.

        • roleplaynot in name
        What it shows
The Roleplay Scenarios list with “At the Airport” enlarged, plus scenarios for a phone call, a date and asking for directions.
        Why it converts
Lists concrete situations a learner can picture. The caption names real-life scenarios in plain words.
      • #5

Avoid awkward situations... ...by practicing them beforehand.

          What it shows
A “Shopping at a Store” chat with “What to do” prompts and a red “Recording... 0:09” bar enlarged at the bottom.
          Why it converts
Speaks to a fear, being stuck for words in real life, and shows how the app helps: practice first. The recording bar shows that the learner speaks aloud, not only types.
        • #6

Short lessons that fit into a busy schedule

            What it shows
A lesson-complete screen with “Amazing Work!”, a 3 Day Streak card enlarged, and time, lessons and accuracy tiles (5-7m, 1, 94%).
            Why it converts
Sets an expectation of a small time cost.

          Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

          • One symbol, a speech bubble with sound bars, points to talking and voice.
          • Text is the app name only and sits under the symbol. Check that it is needed, since the name already appears beside the icon in the store.
          • The blue matches the solid blue background of most screenshots, so icon and gallery look related.
          1. 01

            Person first, then the product

The first image is a photo of a person speaking to a phone with a badge at the bottom. The next images switch to solid blue with real app screens.

          2. 02

Cards break out of the phone

A lesson card, a voice button, a scenario row, a recording bar and a streak card are enlarged past the device frame. The key piece stays readable when the image is small.

          3. 03

            Captions name situations

Hands-free, the airport and shopping are concrete scenes a learner can picture.

          4. 04

            Headline plus a supporting line

Most captions have a headline and a supporting line. The headline carries the message. The supporting line adds detail that may not be read at thumbnail size.

          5. 05

One solid color across most of the set

Most screenshots after the first share a blue background and white type, so the set reads as one system.

          Where the points are

          1. Ask happy users for a rating+19 pts

4.3 stars from 117 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

          2. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

2 caption terms aren't in the app name: hands-free, roleplay. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

          Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

          • Say in screenshot 1 what the user learns or gets, not only that they speak.
          • If you show a person, add words that name the benefit so the image does not rely on the photo alone.
          • Enlarge the one card or button that matters so it reads at thumbnail size.
          • Name real situations, like an airport or a store, in captions instead of general promises.
          • Put the key message in the large headline and keep the supporting line optional.
          • Show a printed award or badge only if it is real, and place it where a visitor sees it early.
          How it works

          How the ASO score works

          1. 01

            App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

          2. 02

            Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

          3. 03

            Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

          4. 04

            Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

          FAQ

          Common questions

          What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “LingoChatAI: Speak Confidently”, which uses 30. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. LingoChatAI uses them for hands-free.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. LingoChatAI uses 8.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
