Screenshots and why they convert

8 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: Understand your growth
  2. Screenshot 5: Train hard rest smart
  3. Screenshot 6: Climb while they sleep
  1. #1In search results

Turn your life into video game

      What it shows
Two anime-style characters in dark clothing on a night city backdrop. Two badges at the bottom: “1M+ USERS” and “4.8 APPS WE LOVE” with five stars.
      Why it converts
The caption sets a game theme but does not say what the app does. But no app screen is shown, so a visitor can't see what they do in the app. The badges give numbers early, and they are the app's own claims.
    • #2In search results

      66 日間

        What it shows
A large “66 日間” title above a phone showing “DAY 14 / 66” and a to-do list: Run 5km, 20 push-ups, Read 20 pages, Meditate 5 min. One card is lifted out of the list.
        Why it converts
Shows the daily routine in use, with real habits a visitor can picture as their own. The title carries the 66-day idea from the app's name, but it is a number and a word with no benefit stated.
      • #3In search results

        Level up in real life

        • level upnot in name
        What it shows
A “Your Rating” screen: level 33, 235,500 XP, and five stats (wisdom, confidence, strength, discipline, focus) with numbers.
        Why it converts
Shows the game idea in one screen: a level, XP and stats. The short caption has one orange word, and the large numbers stay readable when the image is small.
      • #4

        Understand your growth

        • growthnot in name
        What it shows
An Insight screen with a character class named “ROGUE”, five stat tiles, a task total chart, a task suggestion card and a course banner at the bottom.
        Why it converts
Adds a second reason to install: seeing how you are doing. The screen holds many small cards and small text, so the detail is hard to read in search results. The caption does the work.
      • #5

        Train hard rest smart

          What it shows
A Workout Tracker screen with a Push Day session: 42 min, 4 moves, 14 sets, an orange Start Workout button, and a list of recent sessions.
          Why it converts
Shows a concrete feature that fitness app users know. The caption is a short slogan and does not name the feature.
        • #6

          Climb while they sleep

            What it shows
A Season screen: Gold II rank, 160 XP left to Gold I, unlockable rewards, a daily XP chart and a leaderboard with the user at #26.
            Why it converts
Shows the competitive side: rank, rewards and a leaderboard. It gives a reason to come back each day. The caption is playful and says little about what the screen is, so the image has to explain it.

          Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

          120px
          60px
          40px
          • One symbol, a rising sun, with no text. It reads as a fresh start, which fits the name.
          • Plain black background and white shape give strong contrast at small sizes.
          • The icon is black and white, while the screenshots add orange and anime art. The dark base ties them together, but the orange is not in the icon.
          1. 01

            Habits as a game

Levels, XP, stats, ranks and a leaderboard appear across the set. Most images show one part of the game idea.

          2. 02

            Two-tone caption

Big white capitals with one orange word, such as LEVEL, GROWTH or SMART. The accent word is the one the eye lands on.

          3. 03

Same dark look on most images

Most images use a black background, orange accent, bold sans type and a phone frame. Swiping through reads as one story.

          4. 04

Trust badges on the first image

“1M+ USERS” and “4.8 APPS WE LOVE” sit at the bottom of image 1. They are the app's own printed claims.

          5. 05

            Art first, product second

The first image is character art with no app screen. The product shows up from image 2 on.

          Where the points are

          1. Ask happy users for a rating+6 pts

4.7 stars from 12,905 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

          2. Use the rest of the app name+2 pts

6 characters are free. Add the next most important search term.

          3. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

2 caption terms aren't in the app name: level up, growth. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

          4. Win back installs

Downloads fell 0.1% while revenue rose 185.5%. A product page that converts more of its visitors wins installs back without more ad spend.

          Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

          • Show the app in use in the first image, so a visitor sees what they will do.
          • If you lead with a concept, pair it with one real screen.
          • Give each image one idea and a caption of four words or fewer.
          • Use one accent color for the key word in every caption.
          • Put your best proof, such as users or rating, where it is easy to read.
          • Keep screens simple at small size. Enlarge the one number or button that matters.
          How it works

          How the ASO score works

          1. 01

            App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

          2. 02

            Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

          3. 03

            Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

          FAQ

          Common questions

          What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “Life Reset: 66 Day Habit”, which uses 24. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. Life Reset uses them for level up.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. Life Reset uses 8.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
