Screenshots and why they convert

10 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: Authentic Leica Looks at your fingertips
  2. Screenshot 5: Legendary Leica Lenses, precisely recreated on your iPhone
  3. Screenshot 6: Take your photo your way

    Our iconic Leica Looks...

    • leica looksnot in name
    What it shows
A camera viewfinder with a close-up portrait, an APERTURE label, a focus dial and a shutter button, on a black background.
    Why it converts
Shows a real camera screen in use. The caption is a brand line that ends in dots, so it needs the next image to finish the idea, and it does not say this is a manual camera.
  2. #2In search results

...now integrated with iPhone technology. Intuitive photo and portrait modes

    • portrait modesnot in name
    What it shows
A phone cropped at the screen edge with the same portrait in the viewfinder, plus timer and flash icons.
    Why it converts
Finishes the sentence from the first image and names the photo and portrait modes. The caption is long for its size, and the phone is cropped so little of the interface shows.
  3. #3In search results

      What it shows
A settings panel with PHOTO and APERTURE tabs and tiles for Format (RAW JPG), Look, Timer, Flash, Grid, Level, Histogram and Focus Peaking. Histogram and Focus Peaking carry a PRO badge.
      Why it converts
Shows the manual controls the app name promises. The PRO badges tell a visitor which tools sit behind a paid tier. No caption is printed, so the message depends on the visitor reading small labels.
    • #4

Authentic Leica Looks at your fingertips

      • leica looksnot in name
      What it shows
The same portrait in six Look options: Leica STD, CNT, ETN, BLU, BW NAT and BW HC. One tile has a red outline.
      Why it converts
One idea in one frame, and the grid of Look options makes the choice easy to see. The short caption names the feature directly.
    • #5

Legendary Leica Lenses, precisely recreated on your iPhone

      • leica lensesnot in name
      What it shows
An in-app welcome screen with the Leica logo, a row of lens images, Look names under them and a red Next button.
      Why it converts
Explains where the camera feel comes from with product images of lenses. It is an onboarding screen, not a shooting screen, and its small body text is hard to read at search size.
    • #6

      Take your photo your way

        What it shows
A viewfinder with flowers and city buildings, a PHOTO MANUAL MODE label, ISO and shutter speed readouts, an exposure scale and a shutter button.
        Why it converts
Shows the manual controls on a real scene, so the app name and the screenshot agree. The caption is a general slogan and does not name a specific feature.

      Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

      120px
      60px
      40px
      • One symbol, the Leica logo, so the brand is clear at once.
      • The red circle is the brand's own mark, and red shows up again in the PRO badges and the Next button.
      • The icon is text, but the text is the logo, so it is essential here.
      • It has no fine detail, so it should stay readable at small sizes. How it looks in dark or tinted mode was not checked.
      1. 01

        Black background, white captions

Most images use the same dark background and large white type. The set reads as one system, and it fits a camera app where the screen is dark.

      2. 02

        Brand story first

The first captions talk about Leica Looks and Leica Lenses. The app name says manual camera, but the first image leads with the brand and not with manual control.

      3. 03

        Real photos as proof

People, flowers and city scenes fill the viewfinders and the Look grid. Visitors see sample results, not only controls.

      4. 04

        Captions split across images

The first two captions form one sentence across two images. This is a story device, but it only works if the visitor swipes.

      5. 05

        PRO badges shown openly

The control panel marks Histogram and Focus Peaking as PRO. It sets expectations about what is paid before the download.

      Where the points are

      1. Ask happy users for a rating+5 pts

4.9 stars from 8,035 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

      2. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

3 caption terms aren't in the app name: leica looks, portrait modes, leica lenses. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

      Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

      • Say what the app does in the first image, not only who made it.
      • Make each caption work alone, so it still reads if the visitor never swipes.
      • Use real results, such as photos made with your app, next to the controls.
      • Show a feature set as a grid when the choice is the point.
      • Keep body text on in-app screens large, or crop to the part that matters.
      • Use one background and one type style on every image, and match the icon color.
      How it works

      How the ASO score works

      1. 01

        App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

      2. 02

        Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

      3. 03

        Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

      4. 04

        Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

      FAQ

      Common questions

      What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “Leica LUX - Pro Manual Camera”, which uses 29. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. Leica LUX uses them for leica looks and portrait modes.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. Leica LUX uses 10.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
