Screenshots and why they convert

30,000+ Popular Books Dive into a reading world

    • booksnot in name
    What it shows
A grid of colorful book covers with category pills such as Self-growth, Relationships, Parenting and Investment.
    Why it converts
Shows a large library at a glance, which sets the scale of the catalog. It does not yet show what you do with a book, so the use comes on the next image.
  2. #2In search results

15 Min A Book Master big ideas through bite-sized contents

    • 15 minnot in name
    What it shows
A book detail screen with a magnifier enlarging “15 min”, a short “You'll learn” list, and Read and Listen buttons.
    Why it converts
Puts the time cost in the caption and in a badge shown through a magnifier, so a visitor knows a book takes minutes. The two buttons show the choice of reading or listening.
  3. #3In search results

Unique Daily Tailor recommendations just for you

    • dailyin name
    What it shows
A Discover screen with a highlighted “Today for you” row of three book covers and a Categories list below.
    Why it converts
The highlighted row points to the one part of the screen the caption is about. “Unique Daily” is a short label, but it does not say what the visitor gets.
  4. #4

Listen or Read Hands-free knowledge anytime & anywhere

    • listennot in name
    • readnot in name
    What it shows
A reading screen with the text of a chapter and a floating audio player showing The Mountain is You at 00:02 of 04:02.
    Why it converts
Names both ways to use the app in plain words. The player card sits outside the phone frame, so the audio controls are easy to see.
  5. #5

Win at Work Master leadership, efficiency, negotiation, and investment

    • leadershipnot in name
    • investmentnot in name
    What it shows
A “Win at Work 7-Day Plan” timeline with book covers and titles for Day 1, Day 2 and Day 3.
    Why it converts
Ties the app to a work goal and shows a daily plan, which gives a reason to come back.
  6. #6

Be Happy in Life Guidance for Harmony in Family, Relationships, Inner Peace, and Health

    • relationshipsnot in name
    • inner peacenot in name
    What it shows
A “Be Happy in Life 7-Day Plan” timeline with book covers and titles for Day 1, Day 2 and Day 3.
    Why it converts
Repeats the plan layout for a personal goal, so a visitor with a different need sees their own topic. The subline is long and small, so it is hard to read in search results.

Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

120px
60px
40px
  • One idea, a book with headphones, says “audio books” before the name is read.
  • Bright blue and yellow match the blue headlines and yellow accents in the screenshots, so icon and gallery look like one brand.
  • Flat shapes and no text, so it should stay clear at small sizes. The white background may make it blend into a light home screen.
  1. 01

    Blue headline, gray subline

Most images open with a short blue headline and a dark gray line below it.

  2. 02

Highlight cards break out of the phone

The Today for you row and the audio player sit outside the device frame, and the magnifier enlarges “15 min”. The key part of the screen is easy to find.

  3. 03

    Book covers carry the images

Real-looking book covers fill most screens, so the visitor sees the kind of content before opening the app.

  4. 04

    Plan screens for two goals

Two images use the same 7-Day Plan timeline, one for work and one for life. A visitor can pick the goal that fits them.

  5. 05

    Light background on most images

A blue-white background with the same type style on most images. Swiping feels like one story.

Where the points are

  1. Use the rest of the app name+17 pts

5 characters are free. Add the next most important search term.

  2. Ask happy users for a rating+9 pts

4.9 stars from 1,677 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

  3. Ship an update+1 pts

The last update was 37 days ago. A new version also refreshes the "What's New" notes people read before they download.

  4. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

8 caption terms aren't in the app name: books, 15 min, listen, read, leadership, investment, relationships, inner peace. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

  • Show what the visitor does in the first image, not only how much content you have.
  • Put the time or effort cost in a headline when it is small, such as minutes per item.
  • Name each way to use the app in plain words, such as listen or read.
  • Enlarge the one card or number the headline is about, so it reads at thumbnail size.
  • Reuse one layout for different goals, so each visitor finds their own.
  • Keep sublines short. Small gray text is easy to miss in search results.
How it works

How the ASO score works

  1. 01

    App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

  2. 02

    Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

  3. 03

    Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

  4. 04

    Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

FAQ

Common questions

What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. LeapAhead-Daily Book Cast uses them for books, 15 min and daily.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. LeapAhead-Daily Book Cast uses 8.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
