Screenshots and why they convert

6 screenshots of up to 10. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: Learn with best study notes
  2. Screenshot 5: Nail your exam
  3. Screenshot 6: Homework help
  1. #1In search results

    Get better Grades

      What it shows
A bold “Get better Grades” headline, a “№1 AI bud for study” sticker, and three laurel badges: “№1 Study App”, “Editor's Choice Apple” and “20m+ Users Worldwide”. A phone is cropped at the right edge.
      Why it converts
Opens with the outcome a student wants and puts the proof next to it. The badges are the app's own claims; the page does not show where they come from. The phone is cut off, so the screen itself shows little here.
    • #2In search results

        What it shows
A tilted phone with a chat: the question “Explain me mitosis”, a short written answer and a small cell-division diagram below it. A “SchoolGPT” label sits at the top and an “Ask anything” bar at the bottom. No headline is printed.
        Why it converts
Shows the product working on a real school question, which makes the first image concrete. With no caption, the picture has to explain itself, and the tilted text is hard to read at small size.
      • #3In search results

        Understand every topic

          What it shows
Five colored tiles with labels: Quizzes, Mock Exams, AI Summaries, Homework Scan and Flashcards. A short line under the headline says the tools give easy explanations and visuals.
          Why it converts
Lists the feature set in one clean image. Each tile names a thing students look for, and the colors make them easy to tell apart. It is a list, so it works as a menu more than as a single benefit.
        • #4

          Learn with best study notes

          • study notesnot in name
          What it shows
A handwritten note page on shapes of molecules, with a table of electron counts and drawn structures. A “Shapes of molecules” label and a heart count of 8.79K sit below. A line says the notes are created by A+ students in every subject.
          Why it converts
Shows the content library, not just the AI. A real-looking note and a like count suggest other students share this material. The note text is small, so it reads as proof of content.
        • #5

          Nail your exam

          • examnot in name
          What it shows
A blurred quiz screen behind a sharp green answer card, a “Nicely done!” message, a “Continue” button and an “Explain why” button. A line says the quizzes and mock exams are personalized.
          Why it converts
Ties the quiz feature to a goal, passing the exam. The sharp answer card and two buttons show the feedback loop without making the viewer read the full quiz.
        • #6

          Homework help

          • homework helpnot in name
          What it shows
A camera frame around a printed page of algebra problems, with the page blurred behind it. Round buttons for AI, pi and a flask sit at the bottom. A line says the explanations are step by step and tailored.
          Why it converts
Shows the scan-to-answer start of the flow in a way the caption names directly. “Homework help” is a plain phrase students already use. The image shows the start of the task, not the result.

        Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

        120px
        60px
        40px
        • One shape, a black cat with big eyes, carries the whole icon. It is a character, not a study symbol.
        • No text and no fine detail, so it stays readable at small sizes.
        • The purple background is the same hue family as the screenshot backgrounds, so icon and gallery look related.
        1. 01

          Proof in the first image

The first screenshot pairs a short outcome headline with a “№1” sticker, an Editor's Choice badge and a user count. These are the app's own claims.

        2. 02

          Headline plus a lighter sub-line

Most captions are a large white line with a light-purple line that adds detail. The headline carries the message; the sub-line is extra.

        3. 03

          Named features students look for

Quizzes, mock exams, summaries, flashcards, homework scan and study notes all appear as plain words in the captions or tiles.

        4. 04

Mostly one purple gradient across the set

Most images use the same dark purple gradient, the same type and tilted or cropped phones. Color-coded tiles add variety inside that system.

        5. 05

          Real content, not empty screens

A chat answer, a handwritten note page, a quiz result and a scanned worksheet show what a student actually sees.

        Where the points are

        1. Ask happy users for a rating+7 pts

4.7 stars from 11,193 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

        2. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

3 caption terms aren't in the app name: study notes, exam, homework help. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

        Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

        • Open with the outcome your user wants, then show how the app delivers it.
        • Put proof you can stand behind, such as an award or user count, in the first image.
        • Name each feature with the word your users use.
        • Keep one background, one type style and one caption layout across the set.
        • Show real content on screen, such as a note, a question or a result.
        • Give every image a headline large enough to read at thumbnail size, and keep sub-lines short.
        How it works

        How the ASO score works

        1. 01

          App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

        2. 02

          Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

        3. 03

          Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

        4. 04

          Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

        FAQ

        Common questions

        What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “Knowunity: AI Study & Homework”, which uses 30. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. Knowunity uses 6.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
