Screenshots and why they convert

7 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: Only meet people who match your vibe
  2. Screenshot 5: Match on lifestyle, not just looks
  3. Screenshot 6: Exclusive parties with your crowd
  1. #1In search results

    People worth dating

    • datingin name
    What it shows
A close-up photo of a man and a woman posing together, with the Inner Circle logo and the line “People worth dating” in large blue type.
    Why it converts
Sets the tone with a photo of two people and the line “People worth dating”. It shows people, not the app screen, so the frame does not show what the app does. The caption is large and readable at thumbnail size.
  2. #2In search results

    Opposites don't attract

      What it shows
A blue background and two tilted phones showing member profiles with photo, age, city and interest words such as running, concerts and films.
      Why it converts
Real profile UI sits under a bold line that takes a clear stance. The line is a slogan, not a feature, so it does not say what the app does.
    • #3In search results

      Quality over quantity

        What it shows
A phone with a woman's photo and a message: “Your application has been approved and you're now part of Inner Circle.”
        Why it converts
Shows that members apply and are approved, which supports the quality claim. The approval message is a concrete detail a feature list would not give. “Quality over quantity” is a general phrase.
      • #4

Only meet people who match your vibe

          What it shows
A phone showing a filter list: location (Amsterdam), education, smoking, kids, nationality, industry, first name, profession, school.
          Why it converts
Shows how matching is narrowed, with real filter names. “Vibe” is a vague word.
        • #5

Match on lifestyle, not just looks

          • lifestylenot in name
          What it shows
A “Time to share” screen asking users to select six things they enjoy, with chips such as clubbing, wine, live concerts, museums and movies.
          Why it converts
Explains what the app matches on, using the interests screen. Tappable chips are easy to grasp at a glance. The caption names “lifestyle” as the basis for matches.
        • #6

          Exclusive parties with your crowd

          • partiesnot in name
          What it shows
An event card for a speed dating night with a group photo, date, title, a description box and an RSVP button.
          Why it converts
Shows a second reason to join: in-person events. The event card makes the offer concrete. The description box covers part of the card. This is the last image in this set, with no call to download.

        Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

        120px
        60px
        40px
        • The icon is the logo wordmark: white text with a thin arc on near-black. There is no separate symbol.
        • The name is readable at large sizes.
        • The black and white look matches the dark and cream screenshots, but not the bright blue ones, so the link is partial.
        1. 01

          Bold condensed headlines

Most images have a short all-caps headline in large condensed type, in blue, black or white. It reads at thumbnail size.

        2. 02

          Slogans before features

Most captions state an attitude, such as “Opposites don't attract”, and the screen below shows the proof. The visitor has to connect them.

        3. 03

          Blue, black and cream rotate

The background color changes between images while the type, the small circle and arrow marks, and the phone frames stay similar. It still reads as one system.

        4. 04

          Selectivity as the pitch

The approval screen, the filter list and the interests picker all say the app is choosy about who joins and who you see.

        5. 05

Real screens in a device frame

Five images show actual app screens: profiles, an approval message, filters, interests and an event. They are real UI, not stock art.

        Where the points are

        1. Ask happy users for a rating+14 pts

4.3 stars from 10,280 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

        2. Use the rest of the app name+7 pts

5 characters are free. Add the next most important search term.

        3. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

2 caption terms aren't in the app name: lifestyle, parties. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

        Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

        • Put a screen that shows what the app does in the first image, not only a mood photo.
        • Pair each slogan with a plain caption or a clear screen, so the visitor does not have to guess.
        • Use one headline style on every image. Change the background color, not the type.
        • Make headline text large enough to read when the image is shrunk.
        • Show real screens that prove the claim, such as an approval message or a filter list.
        • Add a trust signal, such as a rating or press mention, where visitors see it first.
        How it works

        How the ASO score works

        1. 01

          App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

        2. 02

          Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

        3. 03

          Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

        4. 04

          Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

        FAQ

        Common questions

        What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “Inner Circle - Dating App”, which uses 25. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. Inner Circle uses them for dating.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. Inner Circle uses 7.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
