Screenshots and why they convert

9 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

    The all-in-one real estate app

      What it shows
A yellow panel with the logo, “The all-in-one real estate app” and “100% Free”, above a smiling couple looking at a phone. A “Deutscher App-Award 2025” badge sits at the lower left, with a small footnote naming the study.
      Why it converts
Says what the app is and that it costs nothing, so the visitor does not have to guess. The badge is the app's own printed claim of first place in a German app award study, and it sits in the first image.
    • #2In search results

      Rent & Buy

      • rentnot in name
      • buynot in name
      What it shows
A phone showing a home screen with a “Start a new search” bar and a large listing card: €1,206, apartment for rent, 2 rooms, 57 m², floor 3.
      Why it converts
Names both ways people use a property app, rent and buy, in two words. The enlarged listing card shows the price and size at a glance.
    • #3In search results

      Find your Perfect Spot

        What it shows
A map of Munich with a search radius circle, a “4.147 results” bubble and white price pins, with a List button at the bottom.
        Why it converts
Shows map search, which is how many people look for a home. The caption is a general phrase, so the map has to carry the meaning.
      • #4

        Filter Your Perfect Match

        • filternot in name
        What it shows
A smiling woman holding a phone, with six checkbox chips such as Balcony / Terrace, Parking / Garage and Built-in kitchen, and a “Show 7624 results” button.
        Why it converts
Turns filters into concrete choices a visitor can picture. A person and large chips keep the screen simple and readable at small size.
      • #5

        All You Need to Know

          What it shows
A listing page for a semi-detached house at €940,000. A white card is enlarged over the phone with rooms, living space, plot area and availability, above Contact and Call buttons.
          Why it converts
Shows the facts a buyer checks first and the way to reach the seller. The enlarged card keeps those numbers readable.
        • #6

          Save your Favorites

          • favoritesnot in name
          What it shows
The Saved tab with Favorites and Searches, and a large apartment card showing €489,990, 3 rooms, 75 m² and an address.
          Why it converts
Shows that listings can be kept and found again. The Searches tab hints at saved searches as well.

        Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

        120px
        60px
        40px
        • The icon is the brand name in two stacked words, so it is text-led rather than a symbol.
        • Dark gray and yellow match the yellow background and dark type in every screenshot.
        • Large bold letters and two flat color blocks stay clear at small sizes.
        1. 01

          Yellow background across the set

Most screenshots use the same yellow field and dark bold headline. The set reads as one brand and matches the icon.

        2. 02

          Short headlines

Most captions run two to four words in large dark type. They are easy to read at thumbnail size.

        3. 03

Printed proof in the first image

The first image carries an award badge and a “100% Free” line, so trust and price are answered before any feature.

        4. 04

          Enlarged cards over the phone

Listing cards and fact boxes are enlarged over the phone. Price, rooms and size stay readable when the image is small.

        5. 05

          People mixed with product screens

Real people appear on the first and fourth images. The other images show the app in use.

        Where the points are

        1. Ask happy users for a rating+11 pts

4.7 stars from 1,824 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

        2. Use the rest of the app name+3 pts

8 characters are free. Add the next most important search term.

        3. Ship an update+2 pts

The last update was 47 days ago. A new version also refreshes the "What's New" notes people read before they download.

        4. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

4 caption terms aren't in the app name: rent, buy, filter, favorites. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

        Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

        • Say what the app is and what it costs in the first image.
        • Put a trust badge in the first image if you have a real one, and keep its footnote.
        • Name your main use cases in plain words, such as rent and buy.
        • Enlarge the key card or number so it reads at thumbnail size.
        • Use one background color and one headline style, and match them to the icon.
        • Make headlines concrete when you can: a general phrase leaves the screen to explain it.
        How it works

        How the ASO score works

        1. 01

          App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

        2. 02

          Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

        3. 03

          Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

        4. 04

          Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

        FAQ

        Common questions

        What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “immowelt – Real Estate”, which uses 22. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. immowelt uses them for rent.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. immowelt uses 9.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
