Screenshots and why they convert
7 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

#1In search results
AI cutout and background removal Only keep what you want
- cutoutnot in name
- background removalnot in name
- What it shows
- A woman with a camera, half cut out onto a transparent grid and half showing the original background, with a divider handle and a cutout toolbar.
- Why it converts
- Shows the result of the feature in one frame, with a before and after split. The first line names a task people look for.

#2In search results
Put on trending makeup with 1 tap
- makeupnot in name
- What it shows
- A close portrait with makeup applied, a small “before” photo in the corner, an opacity slider and Skin tone, Makeup and Highlighter tools.
- Why it converts
- The caption promises a fast result (“1 tap”) in plain words. The small before photo lets a visitor see the change.

#3In search results
Portrait retouch tools Bring out the best of you
- portrait retouchnot in name
- What it shows
- A portrait on a blue shape with a zoomed “before” skin patch, above a grid of skin tools such as Pore, Smooth, Wrinkles and Whiten teeth.
- Why it converts
- The tool grid shows how much control the app offers. The second line is a general promise, so the first line carries the meaning.

#4
Cinematic filters
- filtersnot in name
- What it shows
- A lighthouse photo split into “before” and “after” halves, with a row of filter presets and tabs for Portrait, Filters, Adjust, AI filters and Stickers.
- Why it converts
- Before and after on one image makes the filter effect easy to read. The tab row hints at more tools in the app.

#5
AI filters Discover more possibilities
- ai filtersnot in name
- What it shows
- A portrait split between a photo and a cartoon-style version, with filter choices such as Comic Portrait, Game Face and American Comic.
- Why it converts
- “AI” sets this apart from the plain filters in the previous image. “Discover more possibilities” is general and adds little.

#6
Stylish stickers
- stickersnot in name
- What it shows
- A skateboarder in mid-jump with a blue monster sticker and a heart badge, above a grid of sticker options.
- Why it converts
- A fun, social-style use of stickers, shown on a photo. A short caption with no second line keeps it quick to read.
Icon and design system
What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.
- 01
One tool per screenshot
Each image shows one editing feature: cutout, makeup, retouch, filters, AI filters, stickers. The caption names it.
- 02
Before and after in the image
Several images use a split view or a small “before” photo, so a visitor sees the change without reading.
- 03
Similar dark frame across the set
Most images use a black background, a white caption at the top, a photo in an organic shape with a lime glow, and the tool bar at the bottom.
- 04
Real editor UI under the photo
The tool bar from the editor sits below the photo in most images. It shows the app is a full editor, not a single effect.
- 05
Short feature names as captions
Most captions name the feature in two to four words. Several add a short second line that is more general.

Where the points are
- Ask happy users for a rating+8 pts
4.6 stars from 17,306 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.
- Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords
7 caption terms aren't in the app name: cutout, background removal, makeup, portrait retouch, filters, ai filters, stickers. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.
Apply it to your app
A checklist for your next product page update.
- Show the finished result in the first screenshot, not the menu.
- Use a before and after split when your app changes a photo or video.
- Give each screenshot one feature and name it in the caption.
- Keep one frame, one color glow and one caption style across the set.
- Make the second caption line say something specific, or leave it out.
- If your icon does not show what the app does, let the name and first screenshots do it.
How the ASO score works
- 01
App name, 25 points
Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.
- 02
Screenshots, 35 points
Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.
- 03
Ratings, 25 points
Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).
- 04
Freshness, 15 points
Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.
Common questions
What is an ASO score?
A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.
How long can an app name be on the App Store?
30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “Hypic - Photo Editor & AI Art”, which uses 29. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.
Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?
The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. Hypic uses them for cutout, makeup and portrait retouch.
How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?
Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. Hypic uses 7.
Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?
They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.
Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?
Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
Where the numbers come from
- Apple: Creating your product page
- App name limit (30 characters), up to 10 screenshots, the first one to three shown in search results, keyword field.
- Apple: App Store search
- Search results use text relevance (name, subtitle, keywords, primary category) and user behavior (downloads, ratings, reviews).
- Apple: Ratings, reviews and responses
- The in-app rating prompt can be shown up to three times in a 365-day period.
- Hypic - Photo Editor & AI Art on the App Store
- Name, developer, category, icon, screenshots, rating, release and update dates (US storefront), checked Nov 4, 2026.
