Screenshots and why they convert

7 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: Best Friends In Pro-Quality
  2. Screenshot 5: Next-Gen Photo Restoration
  3. Screenshot 6: Become Favorite Comics Characters
  1. #1In search results

    Fan Cam Moment

    • fan camnot in name
    What it shows
A video of a smiling spectator at a sports broadcast, with a score bar and a play button over a frame strip at the bottom.
    Why it converts
Opens on a vivid video scene. The caption does not say what the visitor does to get it, so the first image shows a result and leaves the action to guesswork.
  2. #2In search results

    Seedance 2.0 Redefines AI Video

    • ai videoin name
    What it shows
A grid titled “AI Videos” with four cinematic thumbnails, one marked with a purple frame and the words “SEEDANCE 2.0”.
    Why it converts
Names a model and the category, “AI video”. A visitor who knows the model name gets a clear signal. One who does not gets only the category word.
  3. #3In search results

    Home Sweet Warmth

      What it shows
A black-and-white photo of a family of three, with a wide “Create” button at the bottom.
      Why it converts
Shows a warm, relatable photo and the Create action. The caption is a mood line and does not name the feature, so the visitor must infer what the button makes.
    • #4

      Best Friends In Pro-Quality

      • pro-qualitynot in name
      What it shows
A stacked set of three photos of a dog and a woman, with two round “BEFORE” thumbnails in the lower corners.
      Why it converts
The BEFORE badges show a source photo next to the result, so the visitor sees what changes. The caption says “Pro-Quality” but the image does not make clear what was improved.
    • #5

      Next-Gen Photo Restoration

      • photo restorationnot in name
      What it shows
A split view of an old black-and-white photo of two boys, colored on the right, with a slider, thumbnails, and Change Photo and Save buttons.
      Why it converts
The slider and the Save button show the whole task: pick a photo, compare, save.
    • #6

      Become Favorite Comics Characters

      • comicsnot in name
      What it shows
A caricature of a woman in an office scene with a “BEFORE” portrait in the corner, a style row (Featured, Free, Anime, Comics, Cosplay) and side tools such as Edit, HD and Share.
      Why it converts
Shows a playful transformation and a row of styles, which hints at a choice of looks.

    Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

    120px
    60px
    40px
    • One letter on a plain dark background, so the icon is simple and has no fine detail.
    • The purple glow at the bottom of the letter matches the purple used in the captions, so icon and gallery share one color.
    • The letter does not hint at photo or video. The name and the screenshots have to explain the category.
    1. 01

Two-line captions with one purple line

Most captions have a white line and a purple line above the phone. The color change marks the phrase to read first. The two lines swap order on some images.

    2. 02

Before and after as the proof

Three images show a source photo or a BEFORE badge next to the result. The visitor sees the change instead of reading about it.

    3. 03

A named model in the second slot

The second image names “Seedance 2.0” and “AI Video”. It speaks to people who already look for the model or the category.

    4. 04

      Mood captions blur the feature

“Home Sweet Warmth” and “Best Friends In Pro-Quality” describe a feeling, not a task. The visitor has to read the image to learn what the app does.

    5. 05

      A shared frame and background

Most images use the same dark gradient, the same phone frame and the same caption position. Swiping reads as one set.

    Where the points are

    1. Ask happy users for a rating+10 pts

4.8 stars from 908 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

    2. Ship an update+2 pts

The last update was 49 days ago. A new version also refreshes the "What's New" notes people read before they download.

    3. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

4 caption terms aren't in the app name: fan cam, pro-quality, photo restoration, comics. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

    Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

    • Show what the app makes in the first image, and say in the caption what the visitor does to get it.
    • Name the features in the words your users use, such as “photo restoration”, in the caption.
    • Use a before and after to show the change, and put a label on the source image.
    • Write captions that name the task, not only the mood.
    • Keep tool rows and small buttons large enough to read at thumbnail size.
    • Pick one accent color for captions and match it to the icon.
    How it works

    How the ASO score works

    1. 01

      App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

    2. 02

      Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

    3. 03

      Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

    4. 04

      Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

    FAQ

    Common questions

    What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “Hype AI - AI Photo & Video”, which uses 26. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. Hype AI uses them for fan cam and ai video.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. Hype AI uses 7.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
