    • video recipesnot in name
    What it shows
A social video of a chicken kebab dish beside a recipe page for the same dish, with calorie and macro tiles, a hand-tap emoji and an ingredient list.

An add-recipe menu listing chat with AI, photo import, website URL, paste recipe and discover, over a recipe grid, with a smiling person holding a phone.
    Why it converts

Adds a second reason to install, and the caption names terms people look for.
  4. #4

Add ingredients to a smart grocery list.

    • grocery listnot in name
    What it shows
A grocery list of 54 items grouped under Produce, with recipe thumbnails across the top and an Order Online button.
    Why it converts
Shows the next step after saving a recipe: shopping. Real list content makes the feature easy to picture.
  5. #5

    Meal plan automatically with AI.

    • meal plannot in name
    What it shows
A weekly meal plan with a dated recipe card for each day and a floating AI button.
    Why it converts
Shows planning as a calendar of dishes, which is easy to read at a glance. The caption pairs a term people look for, meal plan, with the AI angle.
  6. #6

Chat with assistant for personalized meal plans.

Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

120px
60px
40px
  • One symbol, a melon slice, with no text. It reads as a food app, and the name explains the melon.
  • The corner brackets look like a camera scan frame, which hints at saving a recipe from a photo or video.
  • Orange background with a green slice, and the shape is simple enough for small sizes. Dark and tinted modes are not shown.
  1. 01

Before and after in the first image

A social video sits next to the saved recipe page. The caption says what the app does, and the picture shows it.

  2. 02

    Two-weight captions

Most captions put the key phrase in bold black type, such as “smart grocery list”. The phrase is what the eye lands on.

  3. 03

    Mostly one feature per screenshot

Most images focus on one feature: recipe import, nutrition, grocery list, meal plan or AI chat.

  4. 04

    Green gradient system

Light green backgrounds, a caption at the top and a phone below repeat across the set. The color shifts toward yellow later, as a variation inside the same look.

  5. 05

    Captions name features people want

Phrases like “meal plan”, “grocery list” and “calories” are things people want from a recipe app. Some captions use “AI”, which also matches the app name.

Where the points are

  1. Ask happy users for a rating+9 pts

4.8 stars from 1,854 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

  2. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

7 caption terms aren't in the app name: video recipes, recipes, calories, nutrition, grocery list, meal plan, meal plans. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

  3. Win back installs

Downloads fell 53.2% while revenue rose 39.7%. A product page that converts more of its visitors wins installs back without more ad spend.

Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

  • Show the input and the result side by side in your first screenshot.
  • Say the outcome in the caption, then show the screen that proves it.
  • Bold the key phrase in each caption and keep the rest light.
  • Give each screenshot one feature.
  • Use real content on screen, such as real dishes and a filled list, so features feel concrete.
  • Add a trust signal such as a rating or press mention if you have one. These images show none.
How it works

How the ASO score works

  1. 01

    App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

  2. 02

    Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

  3. 03

    Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

  4. 04

    Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

FAQ

Common questions

What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “Honeydew: Recipe & Cookbook AI”, which uses 30. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. Honeydew uses them for video recipes, recipes and calories.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. Honeydew uses 10.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
