Screenshots and why they convert
8 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

#1In search results
Tasks & Habits
- tasksnot in name
- habitsnot in name
- What it shows
- A Today screen with a week strip, a to-do list and a daily habit list with progress such as 6,250 / 10,000 steps and 35 / 30 min.
- Why it converts
- Names the two things the app does in the first frame, and the real screen shows how they sit together. Both words name things people look for.

#2In search results
Goal Tracker
- goal trackernot in name
- What it shows
- A Habit Reports screen with year-view dot grids in several colors, each habit with a percentage such as 86% and 81%.
- Why it converts
- The colored grids show progress over a year at a glance, which is the payoff of tracking.

#3In search results
Widgets
- widgetsnot in name
- What it shows
- A home screen with a task widget and a habit widget showing counts such as 3 / 3 and 35 / 30, each with a plus or check button.
- Why it converts
- Shows the app working outside the app, on the home screen. A visitor who wants quick logging can see it is possible. A single word is short, but it names a feature and not a benefit.

#4
Journal
- journalnot in name
- What it shows
- A Journal screen with dated notes, colored and bold text, checklists and labeled entries such as Mood and Study.
- Why it converts
- Adds a use beyond checking off habits. The single-word caption says what the screen is, but not why a visitor would want it.

#5
Calendar
- calendarnot in name
- What it shows
- A weekly calendar with colored blocks for habits such as Wake Up Early, Exercise, Study and Daily Walk.
- Why it converts
- Shows habits placed on a schedule, a distinct use beyond lists. Several block labels are cut off, so the detail is hard to read at thumbnail size.

#6
Focus Timer
- focus timernot in name
- timernot in name
- What it shows
- A Timer screen with a Countdown tab, a 23:45 circular clock, Stop and Pause buttons and a start and pause log.
- Why it converts
- Ties the timer to a habit like Read Book, so it reads as part of the system. It is a simple, clear screen with large numbers, and a good way to end on a distinct feature.
Icon and design system
What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.
- 01
One screen name per image
Each caption is one or two words naming a screen: tasks and habits, goal tracker, widgets, journal, calendar, timer. They are short and easy to scan, though they name features and not outcomes.
- 02
Color changes across the images
Caption and background tint change across the set (blue, red, purple, orange, green). The layout stays similar: caption on top, phone frame below. The color change adds variety inside one system.
- 03
Real app screens with filled-in entries
Most images show the working app filled with believable entries, so a visitor sees what they would get.
- 04
Habit colors carry through
Habit colors appear on several screens, such as the reports and the calendar. A visitor can learn the color code once.
- 05
Breadth beyond habits
Journal, calendar and timer sit next to habit tracking. The set sells one tool for planning a day, not only a habit counter.

Where the points are
- Ask happy users for a rating+7 pts
4.9 stars from 3,300 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.
- Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords
8 caption terms aren't in the app name: tasks, habits, goal tracker, widgets, journal, calendar, focus timer, timer. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.
Apply it to your app
A checklist for your next product page update.
- Name what the app does in the first caption, using the words your users use.
- Keep one fixed layout and vary only the color to keep a set coherent.
- Show real screens with believable entries, not empty states.
- Use the same color code for the same item on every screen.
- Write captions as outcomes where you can, such as what the user gets, not only the feature name.
- Add a rating, award or user count image if you have a real one. This set shows none.
How the ASO score works
- 01
App name, 25 points
Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.
- 02
Screenshots, 35 points
Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.
- 03
Ratings, 25 points
Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).
- 04
Freshness, 15 points
Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.
Common questions
What is an ASO score?
A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.
How long can an app name be on the App Store?
30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “HelloHabit - Habit Tracker”, which uses 26. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.
Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?
The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. HelloHabit uses them for tasks, goal tracker and widgets.
How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?
Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. HelloHabit uses 8.
Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?
They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.
Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?
Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
Where the numbers come from
- Apple: Creating your product page
- App name limit (30 characters), up to 10 screenshots, the first one to three shown in search results, keyword field.
- Apple: App Store search
- Search results use text relevance (name, subtitle, keywords, primary category) and user behavior (downloads, ratings, reviews).
- Apple: Ratings, reviews and responses
- The in-app rating prompt can be shown up to three times in a 365-day period.
- HelloHabit - Habit Tracker on the App Store
