Screenshots and why they convert

9 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: Use mood tracker everyday for closer bonding
  2. Screenshot 5: Easy to follow instructions
  3. Screenshot 6: Conversation topic starters
  1. #1In search results

    Bonding activities for 4-12 y.o.

    • bonding activitiesnot in name
    What it shows
Five colored labels (activities, conversations, digital games, word games, storytelling) beside a cropped phone showing a Mood Tracker tile and a playlists row.
    Why it converts
Names the audience (ages 4-12) and the kind of app in the first frame. The labels list what is inside, but the phone is cropped and its text is small.
  2. #2In search results

Dozens of fun & easy ideas

      What it shows
A grid of six idea cards with photos: volcanoes, bubble maker, fun-faced sandwich, flower hair craft, candy circle melt, chalk mosaic.
      Why it converts
Photos of real projects make the content concrete. The caption is generic, so the idea names on the cards do the selling.
    • #3In search results

Create Your Own A.I. Kids Audio Stories

      • audio storiesnot in name
      • kids storiesnot in name
      What it shows
An audio player screen titled FairyTeller with cover art of a child reading, play controls, and storybook illustrations below the phone.
      Why it converts
Names a specific feature with a clear outcome. The illustration style fits a children's app and matches the rest of the set.
    • #4

Use mood tracker everyday for closer bonding

      • mood trackernot in name
      What it shows
A “How are you feeling today?” screen with eight square emoji faces labeled Happy, Sad, Scared, Worried, Angry, Tired, Calm and Silly.
      Why it converts
Shows one feature in a clear, large layout. The caption ties the feature to the app's bonding promise.
    • #5

      Easy to follow instructions

        What it shows
A step screen with a photo of two glasses of water, napkins and markers on purple, with Save, Share and Complete buttons.
        Why it converts
Shows how an activity is used, which answers whether a parent can follow along. The caption describes a quality, not a named feature.
      • #6

        Conversation topic starters

        • conversation startersnot in name
        What it shows
An adult and a child in a bed tent illustration above a phone card reading “Who made you laugh today?” under About the Day.
        Why it converts
A sample question makes the feature easy to picture, and the illustration shows the parent-child use.

      Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

      120px
      60px
      40px
      • One symbol, a smiling heart, signals warmth and family without any text.
      • The rainbow gradient does not match the blue, orange and pink palette used in the screenshots.
      • The two small dots above the heart add detail that may blur at the smallest sizes.
      1. 01

        Audience in the first caption

The first caption states the age range, 4-12. A parent can tell at once if the app is for their child.

      2. 02

        Bold two-line captions

Dark navy headline type sits at the top of most images. Some captions switch one phrase to a second color, such as orange or teal.

      3. 03

        Illustrations carry the family story

Cartoon scenes of a parent and child appear in the story and conversation images. They show who uses the app without photos of real people.

      4. 04

Content photos as proof of variety

The idea grid and the step screen use real project photos. They show what a child would actually make.

      5. 05

        Most images show one feature

Activities, stories, mood tracker, instructions and conversation starters each get their own image. Some captions are generic, so the on-screen content explains the feature.

      Where the points are

      1. Ship an update+15 pts

The last update was 223 days ago. A new version also refreshes the "What's New" notes people read before they download.

      2. Ask happy users for a rating+10 pts

4.7 stars from 2,937 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

      3. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

5 caption terms aren't in the app name: bonding activities, audio stories, kids stories, mood tracker, conversation starters. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

      Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

      • Put your audience in the first caption, such as an age range or a role.
      • Show real content, not only menus, so visitors see what they will get.
      • Give each image one named feature and one clear caption.
      • Use sample content, like a real question or recipe, to make a feature easy to picture.
      • Keep the icon palette close to the screenshot palette.
      • Add a rating, award or user count if you have one, so the gallery gives visitors a reason to trust it.
      How it works

      How the ASO score works

      1. 01

        App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

      2. 02

        Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

      3. 03

        Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

      4. 04

        Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

      FAQ

      Common questions

      What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “Hearty App: Everyday Bonding”, which uses 28. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. Hearty App uses them for bonding activities and audio stories.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. Hearty App uses 9.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
