Screenshots and why they convert

10 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: Track Earnings See your total and hourly earnings across all your work
  2. Screenshot 5: Compare Earnings See how your pay compares to others
  3. Screenshot 6: Maximize Tax Savings Track every mile and save up to $3,000/yr
  1. #1In search results

    Maximize your earnings with Gridwise

    • earningsnot in name
    What it shows
An earnings screen on a tilted phone with weekly earnings, expenses and mileage bars, plus a second phone partly showing Instacart and Lyft.
    Why it converts
Names the app and the main job in the headline. The Instacart and Lyft rows hint at who it is for. The tilted phones crop the UI, so the screen is hard to read at small size.
  2. #2In search results

Trusted by 1 million+ workers Make up to $300 more per week!

    • earningsnot in name
    What it shows
A Weekly Recap screen reading “You earned $853.28 over 32 trips”, a badge saying “Trusted by 1 million+ workers”, and the headline “Make up to $300 more per week!”
    Why it converts
Puts a user count and an earnings claim next to a real earnings screen. Both are the app's own printed claims.
  3. #3In search results

Maximize Earnings View best times, apps, and places to earn more

    • best timesnot in name
    • places to earnnot in name
    What it shows
A “Where to Work” list of ranked Washington, DC areas, with green and red callouts about earnings per trip.
    Why it converts
Names a concrete use: where and when to work. One idea per image.
  4. #4

Track Earnings See your total and hourly earnings across all your work

    • track earningsnot in name
    • hourly earningsnot in name
    What it shows
An Insights screen with last week's trends: earnings, trips, per hour, per trip, per mile, with green and red arrows.
    Why it converts
“Track earnings” is a plain phrase people look for. The green and red arrows make the numbers quick to scan.
  5. #5

Compare Earnings See how your pay compares to others

    • compare earningsnot in name
    What it shows
A bar chart comparing “You $19.76” with a “Washington, DC $16.23” average.
    Why it converts
One clear chart with one message. Comparing with others is an emotional hook, not a feature list. The chart is simple, so it reads at small size.
  6. #6

Maximize Tax Savings Track every mile and save up to $3,000/yr

    • tax savingsnot in name
    • track every milenot in name
    What it shows
A “Classify Miles and Time” screen with trip maps and swipe areas labeled Business and Personal.
    Why it converts
Shifts from earnings to a second reason to install: tax deductions. The savings figure is the app's own claim. The colored swipe areas show the action without extra words.

Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

120px
60px
40px
  • One abstract black mark on white. Simple and bold, with no text.
  • The mark does not hint at driving or earnings, so the name and screenshots carry the meaning.
  • Black on white has strong contrast, but the icon does not share the purple and pink gradient used in the screenshots.
  1. 01

    Earnings first, tax second

The set opens on earnings, then where to work, trends, comparison and tax savings. Most images show one benefit for a gig worker.

  2. 02

Trust badge beside a money claim

A “Trusted by 1 million+ workers” badge sits next to “Make up to $300 more per week!” on the second image. Both are the app's own claims.

  3. 03

    Similar two-line captions

Most captions have a bold black phrase over a gray subtitle, then a centered phone. Later images repeat this layout.

  4. 04

Purple-pink gradient as the brand color

The gradient appears in the first headline, the badge and the chart bars. The color ties the images together.

  5. 05

    Plain phrases people look for

Captions use “Track Earnings”, “Compare Earnings” and “Tax Savings”. These are words a driver may use.

Where the points are

  1. Ask happy users for a rating+3 pts

4.9 stars from 28,595 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

  2. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

8 caption terms aren't in the app name: earnings, best times, places to earn, track earnings, hourly earnings, compare earnings, tax savings, track every mile. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

  • Name your main job in the first headline, in plain words.
  • Put a user count next to the benefit it supports, and keep the number true.
  • Give each screenshot one idea and one caption.
  • Use one caption layout across the set so images read as one story.
  • Make subtitles larger or darker so they hold up at search-result size.
  • Crop the phone less when the screen is the proof.
How it works

How the ASO score works

  1. 01

    App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

  2. 02

    Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

  3. 03

    Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

  4. 04

    Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

FAQ

Common questions

What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “Gridwise: Gig Driver Assistant”, which uses 30. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. Gridwise uses them for earnings, earnings and best times.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. Gridwise uses 10.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
