Screenshots and why they convert

5 screenshots of up to 10. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: We Block Billions Of Spam Calls And Messages.
  2. Screenshot 5: Stay safe with real user feedback.
  1. #1In search results

    The World's Best Spam Application

    • spamin name
    What it shows
Large dark text on a light blue gradient with the Getcontact logo, and a laurel badge reading “1 Billion Total Downloads”. No app screen.
    Why it converts
It uses the word spam and puts a download count up front. But it shows no phone and no call, so a visitor still has to guess what the app does on screen.
  2. #2In search results

Instant caller identity and spam protection.

    • caller identitynot in name
    • spamin name
    What it shows
An incoming call screen with a +1 (212) number labelled “Insurance Fraud” and “Identified With Getcontact”.
    Why it converts
This is the app in use: a call arrives and you see who it is before you answer. It explains the product in one glance, and would also work as the first image.
  3. #3In search results

    Block Unwanted SMS!

    • block smsnot in name
    What it shows
An “Unwanted” message list with a “Potential Scammer” text pulled out as a large card, and a red block icon beside it.
    Why it converts
Adds a second job, text messages, to calls. The enlarged card and block icon carry the point even if the list behind is blurred.
  4. #4

We Block Billions Of Spam Calls And Messages.

    • spam callsnot in name
    What it shows
A “Protection and Security” screen with a green “Protection Level: High” gauge and a card reading “309.632.362 potential phone call and SMS fraud prevented.”
    Why it converts
Uses a large number as proof of scale. The caption gives a company-wide total, not what happens on the visitor's own phone.
  5. #5

Stay safe with real user feedback.

      What it shows
A contact page for a number with a red “High Spam Activity” warning, “34 Label”, and a user comment card about a number that kept calling to sell credit.
      Why it converts
Shows where the warnings come from: reports and comments from other people. The comment card is large enough to read.

    Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

    120px
    60px
    40px
    • One symbol, a phone handset, says “calls” before the name is read.
    • The same blue is used for the logo and the badge in the screenshots, so icon and gallery look like one brand.
    • No text and only two shapes, so it holds up at small sizes. The white background can blend into a light home screen.
    1. 01

      Claim first, product second

Screenshot 1 is a slogan and a download count. The actual call screen arrives in screenshot 2.

    2. 02

      One phone, one enlarged card

From screenshot 3 on, the key part of the screen is pulled out of the phone as a large white card, so the point reads without the small UI.

    3. 03

      Same background on most images

Most images share a light blue gradient and dark bold captions, matching the blue of the icon.

    4. 04

      Proof in several forms

A download count, a count of prevented fraud, and a user comment. Each is a different kind of reason to trust the app.

    5. 05

      Calls and texts covered separately

Calls get screenshot 2 and text messages get screenshot 3, so each use has its own frame.

    Where the points are

    1. Ask happy users for a rating+9 pts

4.4 stars from 61,386 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

    2. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

3 caption terms aren't in the app name: caller identity, block sms, spam calls. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

    Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

    • Show the app doing its main job in screenshot 1, not only a slogan.
    • If you have a strong count, put it next to the product screen instead of on its own.
    • Pull the one important element out of the phone frame so it reads at thumbnail size.
    • Write captions about what the visitor gets.
    • Give each separate use, like calls and texts, its own screenshot.
    • Zoom in on every screenshot before upload to catch stray text or typos.
    How it works

    How the ASO score works

    1. 01

      App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

    2. 02

      Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

    3. 03

      Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

    4. 04

      Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

    FAQ

    Common questions

    What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “Getcontact: Spam Caller ID”, which uses 26. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. Getcontact uses them for spam, caller identity and block sms.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. Getcontact uses 5.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
