Screenshots and why they convert

8 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: Discover podcasts and independent voices.
  2. Screenshot 5:
  3. Screenshot 6: See, question, Fact-check.
  1. #1In search results

The Truth gets buried We help you find it.

      What it shows
A phone showing the Freespoke home screen with a search box that reads “Privately search for full context…”, and the Freespoke logo below the phone.
      Why it converts
Opens with a claim about the problem, then the app. The search box is visible, but the slogan does not say what the app does. A visitor has to connect the dots.
    • #2In search results

Uncover stories Big Tech won't show.

        What it shows
A news feed for the search “Iran nuclear”, with source tags marked Left and Right, an “Explore Perspectives” button and a left-versus-right source count.
        Why it converts
The first image that shows the product in use. Labeled sources make the “perspective” idea in the app name visible. The caption is a claim, not a described benefit.
      • #3In search results

Information in private. Fully anonymous. No selling data.

        • anonymousnot in name
        What it shows
A web-style results page for “Hubble Space Telescope” with tabs for All, Images, Maps and Shopping, an overview box and news results.
        Why it converts
Shows that the app also works as an ordinary search engine. The privacy lines are the app's own claims.
      • #4

        Discover podcasts and independent voices.

        • podcastsnot in name
        What it shows
Search results for a person's name with podcast episodes, each with a Play Clip button, a quote from the audio and a progress bar.
        Why it converts
Shows a result type people may not expect from a search app. The audio player makes the benefit visible without reading the caption.
      • #5

          What it shows
A badge reading “Over 4.5K ratings” and 4.6/5 with stars, three phones behind a large user review quote, and “Made with ♥ in the U.S.A.”
          Why it converts
A rating and a user quote are social proof printed on the image. No caption states a feature, so this image answers trust, not what the app does.
        • #6

          See, question, Fact-check.

          • fact-checknot in name
          What it shows
A summary screen for a news story with source logos, a Quick Summary, Key Points, a “4 summaries left today” notice and an “Ask anything..” box.
          Why it converts
Shows the AI summary and question box, a different use from search. The “summaries left today” notice is a visible limit on the free use.

        Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

        120px
        60px
        40px
        • One symbol, a torch, with no text, so it stays simple at small sizes.
        • Orange and teal match the logo shown at the bottom of the screenshots.
        • The torch does not say “search” or “news” by itself. The name and subtitle carry that meaning.
        • The white background may need a check in dark or tinted icon modes.
        1. 01

          Bold claims as captions

Several captions state a stance, such as “Uncover stories Big Tech won't show.”

        2. 02

One caption style on most images

Most images use large navy serif text on a light gray background, a phone frame, and the logo at the bottom. The set reads as one brand.

        3. 03

          Four different uses

News with labeled sources, ordinary web results, podcast clips and an AI summary. Four images each show one of them.

        4. 04

Rating and review as one image

The 4.6/5 badge and a user quote sit together on one image. The image has no caption, so it works as proof only.

        5. 05

          Brand logo repeated

The same logo sits under the phone on most images. It builds recognition.

        Where the points are

        1. Ask happy users for a rating+10 pts

4.6 stars from 4,619 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

        2. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

3 caption terms aren't in the app name: anonymous, podcasts, fact-check. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

        Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

        • Say what the app does in the first caption, not only why it exists.
        • Show a real result screen in the first image, not an empty home screen.
        • Name the benefit in plain words. A slogan makes the visitor guess.
        • Keep one caption style, one background and one frame across the set.
        • Print your rating or a user quote on an image, and keep the numbers true.
        • Make sure long captions stay readable when the image is shrunk to a thumbnail.
        How it works

        How the ASO score works

        1. 01

          App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

        2. 02

          Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

        3. 03

          Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

        4. 04

          Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

        FAQ

        Common questions

        What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “Freespoke - Perspective Search”, which uses 30. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. Freespoke uses them for anonymous.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. Freespoke uses 8.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
