Screenshots and why they convert

8 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: AI chat for quick answers
  2. Screenshot 5: Get notes from your phone calls
  3. Screenshot 6: Translate live in 60+ languages
  1. #1In search results

    Never miss what matters

      What it shows
A list of meeting notes under Today and Yesterday, each with a title and time. The app name sits above the headline.
      Why it converts
The headline is a general promise and the list does not show recording or AI. A visitor has to read the app name and title to learn it takes notes.

      Record & Transcribe Live

      • recordnot in name
      • transcribenot in name
      What it shows
A live recording at 12:48 with a transcript of named speakers, timestamps and a Pause button.
      Why it converts
Shows the core action in use. “Record” and “Transcribe” are words people look for, and the speaker labels show who said what.

      Flownote takes notes for you

      • notesnot in name
      What it shows
A finished note titled Product launch planning, with headed bullet lists for plan, team prep and next steps. An Ask anything bar sits at the bottom.
      Why it converts
Shows the result, a ready-to-read summary. The caption is benefit-first, and it names the app.
    • #4

      AI chat for quick answers

      • ai chatnot in name
      What it shows
A question about the launch plan, a written answer, and a Sources list with three note titles.
      Why it converts
Shows what you can do with saved notes. The Sources list shows where the answer came from, which makes the answer easier to check.
    • #5

Get notes from your phone calls

      • phone callsnot in name
      What it shows
A phone keypad with a number typed in, and an incoming call banner from a named contact with Decline and Accept.
      Why it converts
Names a specific use case instead of a general claim. The banner overlaps the keypad, so it takes a moment to see how notes are made.
    • #6

      Translate live in 60+ languages

      • translatenot in name
      • 60+ languagesnot in name
      What it shows
A live recording where Spanish lines appear with English translations below, under a To English label.
      Why it converts
A concrete, countable feature. The translation shown under each line makes the claim easy to picture.

    Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

    120px
    60px
    40px
    • One symbol, a single letter, with a plain background and no fine detail. It stays simple at small sizes.
    • The letter stands for the brand, not for notes or recording, so the icon does not say what the app does.
    • The serif type matches the headline type in the screenshots, so icon and gallery share one look.
    1. 01

      One serif headline per image

Large white serif text on near-black, two short lines. The type is big enough to read at search-result size.

    2. 02

      Same frame on most images

Most images share a dark background, a headline on top and one white phone screen below. The images read as one set.

    3. 03

      Features follow the product flow

After the opening image: record, get notes, ask questions, then calls and translation. Each later image adds one use.

    4. 04

Named use cases in the captions

“Phone calls”, “transcribe” and “60+ languages” are specific. The first headline is a general promise.

    5. 05

      Sample data tells a story

The same launch-planning meeting and the same names appear across several images, so the screens feel like one working example.

    Where the points are

    1. Ask happy users for a rating+8 pts

4.8 stars from 2,503 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

    2. Use the rest of the app name+2 pts

6 characters are free. Add the next most important search term.

    3. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

7 caption terms aren't in the app name: record, transcribe, notes, ai chat, phone calls, translate, 60+ languages. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

    Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

    • Use screenshot 1 to show what the app does, not only a general promise.
    • Put the main action in the caption, such as record, transcribe or translate.
    • Keep headlines to two short lines in large type so they read as thumbnails.
    • Reuse one sample scenario across screens so the set reads as one story.
    • Show the output, such as a finished note, next to the input.
    • Pick an icon that hints at the job, not only the brand letter.
    How it works

    How the ASO score works

    1. 01

      App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

    2. 02

      Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

    3. 03

      Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

    4. 04

      Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

    FAQ

    Common questions

    What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “Flownote - AI Note Taker”, which uses 24. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. Flownote uses them for record and notes.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. Flownote uses 8.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
