Screenshots and why they convert

6 screenshots of up to 10. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: Brand new follow-along classes released weekly so you never have to repeat a workout
  2. Screenshot 5: Expertly taught by Doctors of Physical Therapy
  3. Screenshot 6: Award-winning programs for everyday strength, prenatal, and postpartum
  1. #1In search results

Build real strength without burnout or guesswork

    • strengthnot in name
    What it shows
A woman in a blue top doing a dumbbell row on a grey background, a “Women's Health Fitness Awards 2026” badge, and the evlo wordmark at the bottom.
    Why it converts
The first image says the result (strength without burnout or guesswork) and shows a person training, with no app screen yet. It does not say how the app works, so the next image has to. An award badge is also on this image.
  2. #2In search results

Fully guided strength classes with doctorate-educated instructors

    • strength classesnot in name
    What it shows
A phone showing a class video of an instructor doing a step-up, with a circuit list: Round 1, Round 2, exercise names and weights.
    Why it converts
Shows what a class looks like inside the app, so a visitor can picture using it. The caption names the format (guided strength classes) and gives the instructor credential as the app's own claim.
  3. #3In search results

Your week is planned for you so you always know what to do

      What it shows
A Today tab with a Wednesday “Mat Build” class and a This Week's Cardio section with two class tiles, shown in a phone frame.
      Why it converts
Speaks to a common worry, not knowing what to do next. The screen shows a plan already made for the day, which supports the caption.
    • #4

Brand new follow-along classes released weekly so you never have to repeat a workout

      • follow-along classesnot in name
      What it shows
A top-down photo of a person sitting on a mat holding a phone, with dumbbells and a ball beside them.
      Why it converts
Gives a reason to stay: new content arrives on a schedule. The phone is tiny, so the photo carries the mood and the caption carries the message. The caption is long for a thumbnail.
    • #5

Expertly taught by Doctors of Physical Therapy

      • physical therapynot in name
      What it shows
A group photo of six smiling women in matching blue workout sets, with part of a program list on a phone at the right edge.
      Why it converts
Puts faces to the instructors and states their credential as the app's own claim. People can judge the team at a glance. The cropped program list is hard to read.
    • #6

Award-winning programs for everyday strength, prenatal, and postpartum

      • prenatalnot in name
      • postpartumnot in name
      What it shows
A tilted phone with a Change Track list (3x, 4x, 5x per week), a Women's Health badge, and the line “Named Best Prenatal and Postpartum Workout App by Women's Health”.
      Why it converts
Names the audiences the programs cover, including prenatal and postpartum. Repeats the award as a printed claim from the app. The tilted phone crops the text, so the small lines are hard to read.

    Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

    120px
    60px
    40px
    • The icon is the brand name only. It does not show a symbol or say what the app does.
    • Dark navy with white serif type matches the dark overlays and serif captions in the screenshots.
    • The word is large and plain, so it stays readable at small sizes. It relies on the name and subtitle to explain the app.
    1. 01

      Serif captions in plain sentences

Most captions are full, calm sentence in white serif type. It reads like a brand voice, but several lines run long.

    2. 02

      People first, app second

Photos of trainers and exercisers appear in several images. Phones appear in some images, and some are cropped.

    3. 03

      Credentials as the pitch

Instructor degrees and an award from a magazine are printed on the images. Several appear in the captions.

    4. 04

      Award badge repeated

A Women's Health badge appears at the start and again at the end, so the claim is seen twice.

    5. 05

      Dark overlay keeps text readable

A dark tint sits over photos and phone backgrounds. White type stays readable on busy pictures.

    Where the points are

    1. Use the rest of the app name+21 pts

18 characters are free. Add the next most important search term.

    2. Ask happy users for a rating+9 pts

4.9 stars from 1,547 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

    3. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

6 caption terms aren't in the app name: strength, strength classes, follow-along classes, physical therapy, prenatal, postpartum. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

    Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

    • Name the result you give in the first image, then show the app on the next.
    • Show one real screen per message, so each caption has proof next to it.
    • Keep captions short. Long sentences shrink at search-result size.
    • Print a credential or award as a badge near the headline, and only if it is true.
    • Tint photos behind text so white type stays readable.
    • Keep the phone fully in frame when its text matters. Crops hide the proof.
    How it works

    How the ASO score works

    1. 01

      App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

    2. 02

      Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

    3. 03

      Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

    4. 04

      Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

    FAQ

    Common questions

    What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. Evlo Fitness uses them for strength and strength classes.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. Evlo Fitness uses 6.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
