Screenshots and why they convert

8 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: stories for every mood
  2. Screenshot 5: Listen your way
  3. Screenshot 6: Turn your PDFs into audio
  1. #1In search results

    Listen to anything

      What it shows
A person with headphones on a purple background, with an “Add content” panel, an audiobook list, a “Press play” button, an Apple “App of the Day” badge and “4.7 10K ratings”.
      Why it converts
Says what the app does in two words, then backs it with two trust signals the app prints itself: an Apple award and a rating count. The play button and content panels hint at the how.
    • #2In search results

      in stunningly natural voices

      • voicesnot in name
      What it shows
A row of named voice chips (Chris, Matilda, Will, Bella and others) above a player with highlighted text, a progress bar and the voice “Christopher”.
      Why it converts
Shows the main choice a listener makes: whose voice reads to them. The highlighted line in the player shows what listening looks like. The caption is a short benefit with the key word set large.
    • #3In search results

      Read aloud 200K+ audiobooks

      • audiobooksnot in name
      • ebooksnot in name
      What it shows
A grid of book covers, a “& ebooks” line, five stars and the quote “Gives me the feeeels”.
      Why it converts
A printed catalog size answers “will it have what I want to read?” The real book covers make the library feel concrete. The quote is a user voice, not a verified rating.
    • #4

      stories for every mood

      • genresnot in name
      What it shows
A dark Explore screen with genre tiles (Romance, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Sultry, Horror, Nature), each with a book count, and the line “Pick from 30+ genres”.
      Why it converts
Frames browsing as a choice by feeling, not by title. The genre names are words people look for.
    • #5

      Listen your way

        What it shows
A reading view with highlighted text, a “Bookmark Saved” toast, a “Reading speed: 2x” slider and a “Sleep Timer” set to end in 45 min.
        Why it converts
Groups the controls a daily listener cares about: speed, bookmarks and a sleep timer. The caption is vague, but the three callouts make it concrete. The text in the phone is small and hard to read at thumbnail size.
      • #6

        Turn your PDFs into audio

        • pdfnot in name
        What it shows
A camera view over a printed page with a pause button and sound wave, under a row of voice cards with printed names such as “M. Caine”, “R. Feynman” and “Einstein”, headed “Experience Iconic Voices”.
        Why it converts
Names a concrete use that people look for: turning a PDF or a page into audio. It adds a second, separate reason to install beyond audiobooks. The famous-name voice cards are a hook, but they share the frame with the PDF message.

      Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

      120px
      60px
      40px
      • One abstract mark on a plain white background. It keeps the icon simple and clean.
      • The mark does not hint at reading or audio, so the name and screenshots have to explain the app.
      • Black and white, with no purple. It does not match the purple of the first screenshot, but it matches the black and light screens that follow.
      1. 01

Two-line captions with a key phrase

Most captions pair a short lead line with a bold key phrase, such as “anything”, “natural voices” and “your way”.

      2. 02

        Proof on the first image

The first image prints an Apple “App of the Day” badge and a 4.7 rating from 10K ratings. A visitor sees the app’s own credibility before the second image.

      3. 03

        Numbers that size the catalog

“200K+ audiobooks”, “30+ genres” and per-genre book counts show how much is inside. They are the app’s own claims.

      4. 04

Background changes, caption style mostly stays

Purple, light and black backgrounds appear across the set. The captions keep a similar two-line form, so the set still reads as one system.

      5. 05

        Different needs in different images

One image covers voices, one the library, one genres, one controls, one PDFs. Most images give a different type of listener a reason to install.

      Where the points are

      1. Ask happy users for a rating+7 pts

4.7 stars from 11,150 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

      2. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

5 caption terms aren't in the app name: voices, audiobooks, ebooks, genres, pdf. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

      Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

      • Open with a plain promise of what the app does, in as few words as you can.
      • Put a real trust signal on the first image if you have one, such as an award or a rating count.
      • Use a short lead line and a bold phrase so the key words read at thumbnail size.
      • Print the size of your catalog or library when size is a reason to choose you.
      • Give each image one reason to install, aimed at a different kind of user.
      • Name a concrete use your users want, such as PDFs to audio, in the caption.
      How it works

      How the ASO score works

      1. 01

        App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

      2. 02

        Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

      3. 03

        Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

      4. 04

        Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

      FAQ

      Common questions

      What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “ElevenReader: Read Books Aloud”, which uses 30. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. ElevenReader uses them for voices and audiobooks.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. ElevenReader uses 8.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
