Screenshots and why they convert

9 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: Hazard perception
  2. Screenshot 5: Fully interactive video clips
  3. Screenshot 6: Theory Tutor video lessons

    We’ve helped 3 million users

      What it shows
A large “We’ve helped 3 million users prepare for their test” headline above a phone showing the home menu: Practise, Mock Exam, Road Signs, Highway Code, Theory Tutor.
      Why it converts
Opens with a user-count claim, which the app prints itself, and the menu below lists what is inside. The headline gives proof rather than the app's function.

      Learn all UK road signs

      • road signsnot in name
      What it shows
A Road Signs list with photo rows for signs such as Stop and Warning, each with a progress circle, and 29% overall.
      Why it converts
One feature, named in plain words. The progress circles show the app tracks learning, and real road photos match what a learner will see.

      Over 700 DVSA revision questions

      • dvsanot in name
      • revision questionsnot in name
      What it shows
A quiz screen with a road photo, the question “Why are these yellow lines painted across the road?” and four answers A to D, with Flag and Explain buttons.
      Why it converts
A specific number and a named source make the question bank concrete. The quiz screen shows the format a visitor will practise with.
    • #4

      Hazard perception

      • hazard perceptionnot in name
      What it shows
A phone turned sideways playing a road video with a tractor ahead, with pause, close and replay buttons and an L-plate graphic.
      Why it converts
Names a separate test skill in two words. The landscape phone shows that the clips play full screen, and the image runs on into the next one.
    • #5

      Fully interactive video clips

      • video clipsnot in name
      What it shows
The same sideways phone continues from the previous image, showing a road clip with a car ahead and a blue keep-left sign graphic.
      Why it converts
Finishes the sentence started in the previous image, so swiping feels like one scene. The caption sits low and right, away from the main art.
    • #6

      Theory Tutor video lessons

      • theory tutornot in name
      What it shows
A presenter in an RAC-branded polo shirt speaking to camera, with a subtitle “Hi, I’m Rod Dennis,”.
      Why it converts
Shows a human teacher. The RAC branding on the shirt ties the lessons to the brand in the icon.

    Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

    120px
    60px
    40px
    • The name is printed on the icon, so the topic is clear, but the text is small and busy at the smallest sizes.
    • Road signs and an L-plate say “learner driver” without reading any words.
    • Orange background and teal banners are the same colors used in the screenshots, so icon and gallery read as one brand.
    • Many elements compete: four graphics, a banner and a label. A single symbol would be simpler.
    1. 01

      Printed claims up front

The first image prints “3 million users”, and a later one prints “Over 700 DVSA revision questions”. Both are the app’s own claims and give a visitor a number to weigh.

    2. 02

      Teal banner captions

White bold type on a tilted teal banner over orange. The contrast is high, so captions are readable at small size.

    3. 03

      One feature in most images

Road signs, quiz questions, hazard perception, video lessons. Most captions name one thing a learner needs to study.

    4. 04

      Panorama across two images

A sideways phone starts in one image and continues in the next. It rewards swiping and shows video, which a still frame cannot.

    5. 05

      Brand shapes repeat

The L-plate, the blue sign and the diagonal orange and teal split repeat from the icon into the screenshots.

    Where the points are

    1. Ask happy users for a rating+10 pts

4.8 stars from 925 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

    2. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

6 caption terms aren't in the app name: road signs, dvsa, revision questions, hazard perception, video clips, theory tutor. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

    Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

    • If you have a large user count, print it, but also show what the app does in the same frame.
    • Name each feature in the words your users use.
    • Use a specific number and a named source instead of “lots of questions”.
    • Give captions a solid banner and high-contrast type so they read at thumbnail size.
    • Carry icon colors and shapes into every screenshot.
    • If you split a scene across two images, make sure each half has its own caption and still makes sense alone.
    How it works

    How the ASO score works

    1. 01

      App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

    2. 02

      Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

    3. 03

      Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

    4. 04

      Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

    FAQ

    Common questions

    What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “Driving Theory Test Kit | RAC”, which uses 29. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. Driving Theory Test Kit uses them for road signs and dvsa.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. Driving Theory Test Kit uses 9.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
