Screenshots and why they convert

2 screenshots of up to 10. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. #1In search results

Comprehensive upgrade Quick connection, clear functions at a glance

      What it shows
The device tab of the app with a dash cam photo, a “Not connected” status and a grid of common functions such as remote viewing, cloud album and find a vehicle.
      Why it converts
It shows the app in use and names the camera it controls. The headline is a general claim, though, so a visitor learns little about what the app does. The small function labels are hard to read at search-result size.
    • #2In search results

Record the beauty We have been on the road all along

        What it shows
A social feed post with a photo of autumn trees along a road, plus like, comment and share counts and a comment card.
        Why it converts
It hints at a sharing community, which is a different idea from the dash cam control shown first. The caption is a mood line and does not name a feature, so a visitor must guess what to do here.

      Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

      120px
      60px
      40px
      • One mascot with a lens eye points to a camera, so the icon hints at the product.
      • The word DDPAI is part of the icon. It repeats the name, which the icon guidance says to do only when it is essential.
      • The red and grey colors do not appear in the screenshots, so icon and gallery do not share one look.
      1. 01

        Two-tier captions

A dark headline sits above a second line that explains.

      2. 02

        Mood headlines over feature names

“Comprehensive upgrade” and “Record the beauty” do not name a task. A visitor cannot tell what to look for or what to do.

      3. 03

        Device-first first image

The first image shows a connection screen with “Not connected”. It suits owners of the camera, but gives a new visitor no result to want.

      4. 04

        Shared light style

These images use a pale blue background, a floating white card and the same type. They read as one set.

      5. 05

Few images carry the whole story

With few images in this set, the second one carries much of the story, and the first does not cover the app's main uses.

      Where the points are

      1. Ask happy users for a rating+25 pts

3.5 stars from 13 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

      2. Use the rest of the app name+23 pts

25 characters are free. Add the next most important search term.

      Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

      • Show the result a user gets in screenshot 1, not a status or connection screen.
      • Name the task in the headline, such as the feature people look for.
      • Make the key words large. Small second lines often vanish at thumbnail size.
      • Replace general lines like “Comprehensive upgrade” with a concrete use.
      • Add a trust signal such as a rating, award or named source if you have a real one.
      • Use your screenshot slots to cover each main feature.
      How it works

      How the ASO score works

      1. 01

        App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

      2. 02

        Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

      3. 03

        Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

      4. 04

        Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

      FAQ

      Common questions

      What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. DDPAI uses 2.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
